Heat Duty (MW)
From figure 1, with ∆Tmin = 20oC, the minimum heat utilities needed by the process is 5.2 MW
while the minimum cooling utilities is 8.5 MW. The amount of cooling is much higher compare
to heating process. To consider the heat recovery from hot stream to cold stream, the hot
composite curve must be in a position such that its is always above the cold composite curve for
feasible heat transfer and this is acceptable for the figure 1 in order to have feasible heat transfer.
From figure 2, with ∆Tmin = 20oC, the pinch point temperature is 150oC with heat duty of 0 MW.
At above pinch temperature, the heat needed by the heating process is 5.2 MW. At below the
pinch temperature, the cooling needed by the cooling process is 8.5 MW. At figure 2, there is no
pocket of heat recovery, thus no heat sink or heat source is available in this process.

Utility Saving
Cold utility = 26.47%
Hot utility = 17.82%
The hot utility saving after maximum energy recovery is 17.82%, from 10.1 MW to 8.3 MW. Cold utility after maximum energy
recovery is 26.47%, from 6.8 MW to 5 MW.
