Etymology: Merluccius: Latin, mar, maris = the sea + Latin, lucius = pike (Ref. 45335).

Temperate; 76°N - 18°N, 30°W - 42°E (Ref. 58452)
Eastern Atlantic: Norway and Iceland, southward to Mauritania. Also in the Mediterranean Sea and along
the southern coast of the Black Sea.

lunak: 36 - 40. Inside of mouth and branchial cavity black. Second dorsal and anal fins notched. First
vertebra and neural spine attached to skull. Vertebrae 50-52.

Found usually between 70 and 370 m depth. Adults live close to the bottom during day-time, but move
off-bottom at night. Adults feed mainly on fish (small hakes, anchovies, pilchard, herrings, cod fishes,
sardines and gadoid species) and squids. The young feed on crustaceans (especially euphausiids and
amphipods). Are batch spawners (Ref. 51846). Almost entirely marketed fresh, whole or filleted, to
specialized restaurants or retail markets (Ref. 58452). Utilized fresh, dried or salted and frozen; can be
steamed, fried, microwaved and baked (Ref. 9988). Stocks seem to be over-fished (Ref. 35388).

Diagnosis: D1 8-11; D2 35-40; A 36-40. Gillrakers berjumlah 8-12, 7-9 pada ekstremitas bawah. Vertebrae
(49) 50-52. Warna: biasanya abu-abu batu tulis di atas, lebih ringan di sisi dan perut putih, di dalam
mulut dan rongga branchial hitam. Ukuran: hingga 120 cm SL, biasanya 30-70 cm.
Habitat: tengah laut atau di bawah, terutama pada 100-300 m, di tepi dan lereng landas kontinen. Di
beting, di perairan dalam di musim dingin dan lebih banyak pantai di musim panas; makan terutama di
tengah malam, kembali ke bawah pada siang hari. Makanan: hampir seluruhnya ikan, dalam air kapur
biru dalam air, di musim panas kapur sirih, Norwegia cemberut, ikan haring. Reproduksi: di utara lebih
lambat dari di selatan, biasanya April-Juli di Irlandia dan Mei-Agustus di Skotlandia, awal musim semi di
Bay of Biscay, Januari-Maret di Maroko, sepanjang tahun, sebagian besar di musim dingin dan musim
semi, di Mediterania.
Distribusi: Atlantik utara-timur, Mediterania, dan Laut Hitam. Di tempat lain, tercatat ke selatan di Port-
Etienne.
