Time, the fourth dimension of our physical world, has got a very unique property.
It always moves unidirectionally, in forward direction. However, humans have
been gifted the ability to remember and they use it pretty well to reminisce their
past. With the medium of this publication, we try look back into the golden days
of the Rota-Year 2017-18 with a high zealotry and benevolence. This magazine
is a medium to relay the club’s past activities and to enchant its readers with
quality content. This very treatise is a “souvenir” for the outgoing board and at the
same time a way to “showcase” the talents of the Rotaractors who will take the
lead now. This year’s issue has been designed and curated in an innovative and

focus is “catalyst”. A brief account of the name “Rotalyst” has been penned down

We thank the board to give us the opportunity to outperform ourselves

Paper Drive
The renowned paper drive was an awe-inspiring experience! I had never harboured feeling
of gratification of such extent. In working with a huge crowd towards a motive to help build a
better life for thousands of orphans, I learned a new side of me. While going house to house
to ask for old newspaper, I observed an enlightening change in my confidence and vocational
skills for which I am extremely grateful to Rotaract RVCE. On witnessing the colossal
amount of paper collected I was delighted to be a part of the team to make that happen.

Blood Donation Camp

When I think about Blood donation camp, it brings out the awesome memories and loads of
fun we had during its preparation phase. Working day and night to decorate the whole campus
and coming up with such invigorating ideas to spread the message of Blood Donation. Needles
and injections scared me no more. The count of blood collected that day and dedication
of my teammates inspired me to continue to pursue this road of simple appeasement.

Uptown Junk
In Uptown Junk, I was amazed to see the innovative ideas of the participants, being
moulded from literal junk. It indeed gave the engineer in me an enticing challenge that I
have always wanted to take up. The whole amphitheatre was set up like a small workshop
wherein the teams of devoted contestants kindled the brilliant models out of Junk.

~ Rtr. Ujjwal Bansal

Mega Trek
I had never been trekking, and when Rotaract RVCE announced about Mega Trek and the
plethora of opportunities that accompany it. I could feel the adrenaline rushing up my heart.
The event had an amazing start and a memorable ending. The long trek seemed inconceivable,
but the enthusiasm and vigour of my friends & seniors annihilated my uncertainty. On
completing the Trek, we were informed that we had secured a record in the India Book
Records. This was just icing on the cake! I will always cherish the memories of the amazing feat.

~ Rtr. Piyush Eklavya

Akshara
I was always captivated by the profession of teaching. And Akshara was one such event that
gave me the platform to experience the immense pleasure of going to a school and teaching the
kids who embraced the quality education. I took a class on basic mathematics and feedback
was heartening. The smiles I was gifted with, the joyous crackles of the children; all of it was
heartwarming. Stepping into the shoes of my teachers made me respect them even more.

Dan Brown

The Illluminati Ambigram, featured in Dan
Brown’s book “Angels and Demons”

Dan Brown sure knows how to make anything sound mysterious. He also knows
EXACTLY when to reveal the facts behind the mystery. We all love mystery,
we love to figure it out as we go, it’s human nature. How is this going to work
out? What will happen next? And Dan Brown seems to be able to manage
this basic engagement with same suspense. He also knows how to create a
believable but extraordinary world – a fusion of hi tech stuff, spies, assassins
and secret societies, fused with the ancient and mystical, even paranormal.

My first encounter with his mysterious world was in 11th grade when my friend
suggested me to watch ‘The Da Vinci Code’. Professor Robert Langdon is an
excellent character. I’m not aware of any other symbologists in fiction (before
Langdon anyway) and there are certainly enough symbols to make for many
sequels. I just loved the character and ended up watching another one of his
masterpiece - ‘Angels and Demons’. I liked the same things about ‘The Da Vinci
Code’ and ‘Angels and Demons’ that everyone else did. It is really interesting
to read about all of these true historical facts about these familiar landmarks
and pieces of art. It is fun to know the conspiracies of Bernini or Da Vinci,
and also to hear about these real organizations and locations and get these
inside takes. I was so fascinated by his writing and when I googled for more, I
discovered that he spent a year researching before writing ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

Just like every coin has two sides, his work was subjected to a lot of criticism too.
‘The Da Vinci Code’ had a lot of people upset about the divinity of Jesus and even
the Catholic Church. This got a lot of publicity for the book and the author (ironic).

Now here’s what I don’t like about Dan Brown, and this has NOTHING to do with
him. I don’t like the way he is attacked by so many people online who should really
take a chill pill. Do a quick Google search on his name and you will find an endless
list of blogs and critic reviews just having a pop. I guess success breeds envy and
contempt. I don’t know what makes something ‘great’, but I do know this – if a
lot of people like it, then surely that is an implication of some kind of greatness.

“Relativity”
December, 1953
Lithograph print

MC Echer
It depicts a world in which the normal “laws of gravity” do not
apply. The architectural structure seems to be the centre
of an idyllic community, with most of its inhabitants casually
going about their ordinary business, such as dining. There are
windows and doorways leading to park-like outdoor settings.
All of the figures are dressed in identical attire and have
featureless bulb-shaped heads. Identical characters
such as these can be found in many other Escher works.

In the world of Relativity, there are three sources of gravity,

each being orthogonal to the other two. There are sixteen
characters, spread between each gravity
source, six in one and five each in the other two.
The lithograph is a versatile proof that everyone has their
own lives and people have different perspectives about the
24 same things. So we must respect everyone’s viewpoints

“Untitled” (Perfect Lovers)

1991
Art Piece at The Museum of Modern Art, New York City, New York

Felix Gonzalez-Torres
Felix Gonzalez-Torres made Untitled (Perfect Lovers) at
the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in America. He had lost his
boyfriend of eight years (Ross Laycock) to AIDS-related
illness the very year he fabricated this piece of art. While
Untitled (Perfect Lovers) grew out of his own experience
of love, partnership, and loss, it is universal. Simple in its
construction, it consists of two clocks hung side-by-side
and touching each other on a pale blue wall. Gradually, the
clocks go out of sync. This subtle but elegant presentation
may be interpreted as a metaphor for the progress of the
life of a couple and the consequences of time; which can
eventually introduce disharmony and illness, and that might
decay the piousness of relationship. “We…have to trust the
viewer and trust the power of the object,” Gonzalez-Torres
once said about his choice of imagery. “And the power is
in simple things….It keeps thought from being opaque.”

from what could be described as a serendipitous process. Is
this pattern-finding ability similar to the artistic skill of a painter
like Georgia O’Keeffe? We still know so little about creative
observation that it’s impossible to answer such questions.
That’s why we need to develop a new, interdisciplinary field —
call it serendipity studies — that can help us create a taxonomy
of discoveries in the chemistry lab, the newsroom, the forest,
the classroom, the particle accelerator and the hospital.
A number of pioneering scholars have already begun this work,
but they seem to be doing so in their own silos and without much
cross-talk. In a 2005 paper (“Serendipitous Insights Involving
Nonhuman Primates”), two experts from the Washington National
Primate Research Centre in Seattle catalogued the chance
encounters that yielded new insights from creatures like the
pigtail macaque. Meanwhile, the authors of a paper titled “On the
Exploitation of Serendipity in Drug Discovery” puzzled over the
reasons the 1950s and ’60s saw a bonanza of breakthroughs in
psychiatric medication, and why that run of serendipity ended.
What could these researchers discover if
they came together for one big conversation?
Of course, even if we do organize the study of serendipity, it will
always be a whimsical undertaking, given that the phenomenon is
difficult to define, amazingly variable and hard to capture in data.
The clues will no doubt emerge where we least expect them,
perhaps in the fungi clinging to the walls of parking garages or the
mating habits of bird-watchers. The journey will be maddening,
but the potential insights could be profound: One day we might
be able to stumble upon new and better ways of getting lost.

The discovery of the anti-bacterial properties

of the Penicillium chrysogenum or P. notatum
was a seredipitous one, by Sir Alexander
Fleming.

Rotary International President, Barry Rassin laid out his vision for the future of the
organisation ‘BE THE INSPIRATION’. Going with the same motto, Rotaract Club of RVCE
decided upon its theme for the Rota year 2018-19 to be ‘Inspire the Change Within’.

Mahatma Gandhi said, ’Be the change that you want to see in the world’. Here at
Rotaract club of RVCE, we inspire such changes. Every moment of Mahatma Gandhi’s
life is inspiring. In his young age -the drama of ‘Harishchandra’ was the inspiration
for him to speak the truth. In other words, although life changes are inevitable, we can
also initiate change at an individual level, so that we can rise higher and higher and
surpass the gruelling challenges. This makes us bigger and better of a person by the
denouement of life. Well, the question is, how do we do this? We believe the best ways
are to recognize that change is inevitable, that there is always a potential for positive
change in every aspect and to stay grounded with a modest attitude towards everyone.

We, at Rotaract Club of RVCE, try to transform fear into courage, selfishness into
kindness and loss into fresh beginnings, just as palm trees transform muddy rainwater
into sweet coconut milk. The clue to transformation is being able to move with the waves,
to paddle in the dip so we are ready to ride the next crest. Rotaract Club of RVCE tries
to enable other to be present with whatever is and to accept, honour and move with
change. Just as the breath comes in and out, so it is like coming and going of all change.

In order to do something, one has to long for it, have a strong desire for it. If one
craves for something, one has to endure all the struggles and pain that come with
it. A change can only happen if one wants to envision as it happens, and that change
could be brought to fruition only if efforts are implied in the smartest possible way.

The Club works on the formula – “Clear Goals”, “A Pragmatic Plan of Action” and “Strong
Conviction”.

Inspire by what you Believe In

Inspire by Leading
Inspire by Listening
Inspire by the Courage to Change Course
Inspire by Sharing Credit
Inspire by Teamwork
Inspire by recognising Good Work

Lastly,” To inspire the change within…” means to notice what is happening around us and
to take powerful, solid steps towards constructing the life and world of our imaginations.
Seeing the change, you want to happen will take much of the efforts of wanting, choosing,
and committing the actions to stand for what is right and encourage that change

Be the Inspiration and remember that “Together we can, and we

will inspire the World. 45
