Alcoa employees ‘Wear it Purple’ for LGBTI acceptance

Alcoa employees added a splash of purple to their outfits on Friday in support of LGBTQI+*
young people. ‘Wear it Purple Day’ is an annual demonstration of support and acceptance of
young people’s sexuality and gender identity.

Founded in 2010, after several LGBTQI+ young people took their own lives due to bullying
and harassment, the national day now celebrates diversity and the right to be proud of who
you are.

Managing Director and Chairman of Alcoa of Australia, Michael Parker said Alcoa was
committed to providing a diverse and inclusive workplace which embraced all people and
celebrating Wear it Purple Day showed the company’s support.

“Our wish at Alcoa is for every employee to bring their whole selves to work and to feel
included and valued for who they are and for the diversity of ideas and experiences they
bring,” Mr Parker said.

He said Alcoa was driving change and making its workplace a model for inclusion.

Alcoa was the first resources company to walk in the Pride Parade five years ago, and has
been named an Australian Workplace Equality Index Bronze Tier Employer by Pride in
Diversity for five consecutive years.

Furthering Alcoa’s workplace inclusion commitment is Pinjarra Refinery Manager, Mark

Hodgson, who won the 2018 Australian LGBTI Inclusion Awards Network Leader of the Year
award for his work in promoting inclusion in a traditional, industrial environment and leading
Alcoa’s employee LGBTI action group EAGLE.
