Common Knee Injuries

and Orthopedic
Treatments
Independent Study Mentorship – Fall 2018
Sydney Shindler

Mrs. Click
My Mentor and Mentorship Facility
My mentor for the fall semester is Marilyn Copeland, M.D., who is an
orthopedic surgeon and works at Fondren Orthopedic Group near Clear
Lake Regional Hospital.
ISM Course

ISM, or Independent Study Mentorship, is a course that enables high

school students to follow a self-chosen mentor in a career field of their
interest. Since this course is at a college level, students are required to meet
with their mentor at least three hours a week, create a project that suits their
area of mentorship, and create a product that enhances the project.
My ISM Project
For my fall project, I chose to focus on Common Knee Injuries and
Orthopedic Treatments. Through this topic, I will be examining a meniscus
and ACL injury as they apply to hypothetical patients. I will then discuss the
best recovery options for each patient and why. This project idea was
interesting to me as I know numerous people who have had knee injuries,
and I wanted to learn more about such ailments.
Normal Knee Shape and Function
• Point out major anatomical features (bones, ligaments, etc.) of a normal
knee
• Briefly discuss the function of each of these major features
• Comment on other significant features of the knee (bone alignment,
meniscus shape, etc.)
Meniscus Injuries and Examinations
• Find one particular meniscus injury to focus on and apply to a
hypothetical patient
• Include a short video or reference the type of knee examinations used to
diagnose such injuries
• Mention how the injury will effect the patient’s daily life
Meniscus Treatment Options
• Discuss different treatment options for the particular meniscus injury
• Explain which option would be best for the hypothetical patient and why
(depending on age and activity level)
• Quickly reference recovery expectations
ACL Injuries and Examinations

• Find a certain ACL injury to focus on and apply to a hypothetical patient

• Include a short video or reference a type of knee examination used to
diagnose the injury
• Mention how the injury will effect the patient’s daily life
ACL Treatment Options
• Discuss different treatment options for the ACL injury
• Explain which treatment option would be best for the hypothetical patient
and why (depending on age and activity level)
• Briefly reference recovery expectations
Research Topics
• Various knee assessments
• Will be incorporated to explain how a certain diagnosis is reached

• Common meniscus injury treatments

• Used to compare differences in recovery expectations

• Common ACL injury treatments

• Used to compare differences in recovery expectations
Current Event
Product
• For my product, I plan on making three knee models (one normal, and the
other two with injuries)
• I will include/label most significant knee structures in the normal knee model
• The bones and cartilage will be created with molding clay and ligaments
will be represented by different colors of yarn
• The “injured” models will be stripped of excess features (LCL, MCL, and
patella) in order to focus on the injured structures
Conclusion
• From this project, I hope to learn more about various orthopedic
treatments and how they are chosen based on different aspects of the
patient (age, activity level, severity of injury, etc.)
• I also want to learn more about surgeons in general since that is what I
hope to become one day, especially one that is employed through a
private practice as my mentor is
Thank You
I would just like to send out a huge thank you to everybody that has
helped me on this journey. I could not have done this without any of you. Thank
you so much to Dr. Copeland for being my mentor and teaching me this
semester.
Thank you to my evaluators for taking time out of your day to be here for
me. I really appreciate you having to deal with a student even after school
hours.
Thank you to Mrs. Click for your knowledge and giving me all the tools I
needed to have a successful first semester in ISM.
And lastly, thank you to my parents for knowing both when to push me
and when to help me when I need it most.
