Membership Magic

Adding Members is a 3 part process

Step 1 Raise the profile of your club.....

People want to be part of something fun. People want to make a difference.

Spread the word about what your club does!

Publicise everything.....

Talk about where you money goes.....

Identify who is already involved

Introduce your new members

Be identifiable in the community

Signs at every event

Thank your sponsors

Posters everywhere

Promos in the schools

Partner with other clubs

Show kids giving back

Step 2

Have a membership planning meeting

Brainstorm with the club, get everyone on the same page and recognizing the need for new members!

Will new members like what we do?

Analyse what your members like and dislike about your club. ie: meeting format, time, type of events, dues

Identify the competition for members

Who are your best targets for new members?

Set a time frame

Set a goal

Get everyone thinking about their spheres of influence


Neighbors, family, schools, business colleagues, youth clubs, new to community, networkers, other clubs, coaches, co workers, seniors centres

Ask for referrals!


Tell everyone that you are recruiting!

Practice your elevator speeches

Sell Optimism in 2 minutes or less

Set up a NOW team

Form a target list with help from the whole club

Step 3 Organize a NOW meeting

Keep it casual

Suggested Format -friendly greeters and minglers -friendly atmosphere -wine and cheese, coffee -good speakers -slide show of what you do -end on a positive note

Tell them you would love to have them!

Pass out applications Follow up!

Yippee they joined the club!

Involve them right away!

Invite them to your next events

Embrace their new ideas!

Mix up the jobs in the club


Older members need to step aside and let the new members bring the potato salad, work the door, sell tickets, get involved.

Gail- chaired 1 event, co chaired 2 events, volunteered at 8 events. Sits on a committee. Stepped up as secretary Kelly- co-chaired 2 events, sat on 2 committees volunteered at many events.

Lesley & Tom- co-chaired 2 events, sat on 2 committees volunteered at 3 events. Lynn- idea and co-chair for new event raising $2,000, volunteered at 4 other events.

Sarah- worked on corporate sponsorship team raising $26,000, sat on a committee, volunteered at 5 events. Mike- worked on grant applications, sat on committees, volunteers many events.

Annie- idea and chair for new event raising $1,400, volunteered at 4 other events. Steve- new fundraising idea raising $3,000, chaired and event, sat on a committee, volunteered at 3 events.
