INTRODUCTION:

SCOLIOSIS
3-dimensional

deformity of the spine affecting all the 3 planes. be difficult to visualize with 2-dimensional radiographs is a lateral deviation of the normal vertical line of the spine which, when measured by an X-ray, is greater than 10 degrees accompanied by vertebral rotation.

SCOLIOSIS
Normal alignment Spinous processes all line up in a straight line over the sacrum

Scoliosis is a combination of Angular displacement Lateral displacement

SIGNS OF SCOLIOSIS

Shoulders are different heights Head is not centered directly above the pelvis Appearance of a raised, prominent hip Rib cages are at different heights Uneven waist Changes in look or texture of skin overlying the spine (dimples, hairy patches, color changes) Leaning of entire body to one side

MEASURE SPINAL CURVATURE USING COBB METHOD

BRACING

TLSO Brace

Milwaukee Brace

Charleston night time bending brace

PROBLEMS WITH BRACES

Argued efficacy Narrow treatment window to initiate Poor compliance

Must have good orthotist

Curves

corrected by 20 degrees in brace do better

SURGERY
Indications: 1. Major curvatures (>45 degrees) 2. Rapid deterioration/progression

GOAL OF SURGERY

To produce safe maximal correction with anterior / posterior instrumentation / reconstruction To restore good frontal and sagittal balance

SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR SCOLIOSIS

WEARABLE COMPUTER

BASIC COMPONENTS OF OUR SYSTEM

Control unit 2 EM Receivers 1 EM Transmitter CPU Data acquisition system 3 sensor modules Feedback system Battery pack

PRINCIPLE AND OPERATION

ELECTROMAGNETIC AND ACCELEROMETER TECHNOLOGY IS USED. CPU communication with receivers Receivers uses a PIC MICROCONTROLLER to oversee gathering of data

RESULTS

TRUNK POSTURE GRAPHS

ADVANTAGES:
Easy monitorable of the treatment Due to feedback actions can be controlled High accuracy Portable

DISADVANTAGES:
High cost An attender should be present near the patient

Applications:
To any type of deformity it can be applied.

Helps in reducing dislocations

Wearable computers , now can be used everywhere i.e., from medicinal appliances to home appliances

CONCLUSION:
An accurate, portable, posture monitor has been designed to monitor and record scoliotic progress and by providing feedback has led to new therapeutic treatment for scoliosis. More research is being done to make it as a totally closed system and will definitely be a cure to scoliosis which is a dangerous deformity.
