AN EVOLUTION IN
MOBILE
TECHNOLOGY

02/24/09 RAHUL RAJ 2

AIM OF THE PRESENTATION
To familiarize the audience what EDGE
TECHNOLOGY is all about.

To explain it’s advantage over other

technology.

FUTURE SCOPE of the existing technology.

EDGE TECHNOLOGY:
What is Edge?

How is EDGE related to mobile phones ?

3rd generation mobile communication.

Mobile evolution
1st generation mobile communication
2nd generation mobile communication
2.5th generation mobile communication
3rd generation mobile communication
3G and above

MODULATION &
CODING:
What is Modulation ?

What is coding?

Comparison b/w Modulation and Coding.

 In what way Modulation and Coding Schemes

related to EDGE technology

Modulation and Coding scheme
(MCS)

 Coding and modulation   Speed
 Modulation
scheme (MCS) (kbit/s/slot)
MCS-1 8.80 GMSK
MCS-2 11.2 GMSK
MCS-3 14.8 GMSK
MCS-4 17.6 GMSK
MCS-5 22.4 8-PSK
MCS-6 29.6 8-PSK
MCS-7 44.8 8-PSK
MCS-8 54.4 8-PSK
MCS-9 59.2 8-PSK

Advantages
Balanced improved bit rate at all radio
conditions

No hardware, software change to GSM core

networks

Supports download various file types

02/24/09 RAHUL RAJ 11

Handle four times the traffic of standard GPRS

Smart & adaptive antennas

Triples gross data rate by GSM

Circuit-switched and packet-switched traffic

coexist

02/24/09 RAHUL RAJ 12

Rapid Internet and WAP access

Service available for EDGE phones without tariff

charge

Avoids creating new system

02/24/09 RAHUL RAJ 13

DISADVANTAGES:
EDGE requires base station modifications

Extra mobile terminal hardware and software

required

Frequently referred to as 2.75G

02/24/09 RAHUL RAJ 14

CONCLUSION:
EDGE technology has succeeded the
technology previously used in mobile phones.
Low risk of investment thanks to the dual
mode of GSM/EDGE (Slot by slot)
It support the same technology as GPRS but it
has got higher data rates of more than
400kbits/sec
EDGE allows the delivery of advanced mobile
services such as the downloading of video and
music clips, full multimedia messaging, high-
speed Internet access and e-mail on the
move.
