THE HISTORY

Since its foundation until nowadays
THE BEGINNING

The first sign of human presence was

found in 1.500.000 B.C
THE FIRST CIVILIZATIONS
The first
civilization in
Murcia were the
Iberian people in
750 B.C.
Then the Celtic
people came in
VI and VII B.C.
They mixed with
the Iberians but
they didn’t
replaced them.
THE ROMAN EMPIRE
One part of Murcia was
founded by Romans in 223
B.C. Then, they conquered
all Murcia. The most
important city was Quart
Hadasat and then it was
called Cartago Nova. The
Roman power over Murcia
finished in 476 A.C. The
polytheism was the official
religion in the Roman Empire
until 333 A.C when the
Christian religion was
established.
THE GERMAN PEOPLE

The Suevi, the Vandals and the Visigoths

are some of German kingdoms which
invaded Murcia. The most important of
them is the Visigoth kingdom. They
replaced Roman people in Murcia. It was
in 476 A.C. They didn’t replaced the
languages, religions nor habits.
THE MUSLIM
The Muslim arrived in Murcia in 713 A.C.
Abdurrahman II founded the city in
825. They called it Mursiya. It was very
powerful because of the agriculture.
THE MUSLIM DROP
The most important reason
of the Muslim drop was the
division of the Al-Andalus
(the Muslim kingdom) in
isolated kingdoms called
Taifa’s Kingdoms. It was a
period of instability. The
Muslim had all Murcia but
Aledo, an important town
for the communication,
which was conquered by the
Christians in 1086. The
Christian came from the
north of the Iberian
Peninsula.
THE NEW INVADERS
The Almoravids
invaded the Iberian
Peninsula and they
governed Murcia in
the XIIth century.
In 1165, the Almohad
conquered Murcia.
Their reign was very
short because the
Christians took the
control of the city
78 years later.
Muslim Kingdom in 1243
THE CHRISTIANS
The Christians started to
govern Murcia in 1243 when
Alfonso X el Sabio was
reigning. They reorganized
the territory. There were
many fights between XIII
and XV centuries, in the
Middle Ages. Although the
Christians were governing,
the people kept up habits,
words, invents and the
development in agriculture.
THE SOCIETY OF THE MIDDLE
AGES
The characteristics of the society were
these:
 The population didn’t grow very much
because of the epidemics, the floods, the
pests, the bad crops and the bad sanitary
conditions.
 The agriculture was the principal
economical activity.
 The Christian religious architecture,
sculpture and paint were very important.
