Exposition
-Lives of Jamal, Amin, Reba and Mira.

Rising Action
-Amin and Mira wanted to be the legal citizens of USA ; one of them needs a green card. -Reba planned to marry Amin and wait about a year and once Amin gets his green card, she will divorce her and Mina will marry him.

-Then, Amin will apply for Miras green card.


-However, as they need to wait for 4 years or more to be the citizen of the USA, Mir5a cannot bear her suffering of not being able to marry Amin, and asked Reba to give Amin back to her.

Climax
-Unfortunately, her sister refused and this make Mina swallow a bottle of sleeping pill before seeking Jamals help.

Falling Action
-Jamal asked Mina to marry him so that he can help her apply for the green card and later, he will divorce her and so do Reba, divorcing Amin. -This story ended up with Amin still waiting for the green card.

-Every time he went for the interviews at the Immigration, they will ask him to come back again after 5 months.

Human can change:


-Although Reba loves Mina, but she wanted Amin all by herself so she would not feel lonely anymore (selfish) -Mina changed from trusting Reba as an angel to disappointed (relate to above point)

Characters:

Jamal
-A dentist at a red-brick office of 1205 Michigan Street -Father of Rumi and ex-husband to Reba -A caring father to Rumi

-Love Reba even after divorcing her


-Tall, with broad chest, shiny black hair, fair skinned, wide-jawed, hazel-eyed, and white teethed

Amin
-Love Mina and enjoy every moments with her -Patient; wait until night time to meets Mira (cannot be seen as a couple or the Bengali community will know about their marriage and report it to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) -Young and handsome -Miras husband (they married secretly)

Reba
-Widow of Jamal and mother of Rumi -Miras sister -Filed for divorce because she is not happy with Jamals attitudes (he loves her too much as if he was worshipping her) -A beautiful women and a centre of attraction of every party she attended -Easily falls in love; Jamal since she described him has the look of Tony Curtis -Selfish; take Amin for herself and force Mira to be very desperate until she try to commit a suicide -Lack of maternal instincts; hate Rumi, her own son

Mina
-Rebas younger sister -Amins wife (they married secretly) -Trust her sister very much; as an angel when she is willing to help her and Amin to get the green card -Love literature; love to use sentences from poems and plays -Always argue with Amin about their future childrens name; she wanted a modern name -Impatient; she cannot stand being separated from Amin after he married to Reba -Emotionally unstable; she attempted suicide after she cannot get Amin back from Reba

The Superego It is the moral part of human It acts as an internal sensor and causes the ego to make moral judgment in light of social pressures Superego develops due to the moral and ethical restraints placed on us by people around us. It dictates our belief of right or wrong and manifests itself through punishment

The Ego The ego is based on reality principle which are rational, logical, and the waking part of the mind. It is both the conscious and unconscious state. It is the egos job to meet the needs of the Id while taking into consideration the reality of the situation.

The Id Is the component that enable us to get our basic needs met. The Id wishes to fulfills the urges of the pleasure principle. It houses the libido, the sources of all psychosexual desires and psychic energy. Also contains our secret desires, darkest desires and intense fear.

Situation: Miras attempted suicide

Id: She wanted Amin back


Superego: She knows that committing suicide is wrong but
the shock of Rebas selfish action has made her thinks irrationally (Reba had always been an angel to her ever since she was young)

Ego: Based from the shock of her superego, her ego failed to
choose the best balanced between her Id and superego. Thus, she attempted suicide before she go to Jamals house.

Situation: Reba does not wanted to give Amin back to


Mira

Id: She does not wanted to feel lonely anymore Superego: Her marriage with Jamal has gave her a
trauma of feeling alone

Ego: She finally found a cure for her loneliness and that is
the present of Amin in her life. In order to avoid feeling the loneliness again, her ego has balanced her Id and superego and make her a selfish and heartless sister towards Mira.

Situation: Jamal suggested Mira to marry him

Id: He tried to help Mira since she is her widows sister and she
currently in heartbroken

Superego: His marriage with Reba had taught him the


suffering of lovers that cannot be together with their loved one

Ego: By balancing his Id and superego, he chooses to help Mira


to get the green card in order to put an end towards her suffering.

Freud's theory, -Jamals Id is he wanted to have sex with women since he has not done it for a long time. -Meanwhile, his superego said that he needs to control his sexual feeling. -Thus, his ego, unconsciously, come up with he tried to help Mira by asking her to marry him.

Situation: Amin accept the idea of him marrying to Reba in


order to get the green card before divorced and marry Mira

Id: He does not wanted to keep his relationships with Mira a


secret

Superego: He cannot since later he might fail to get the


green card from the INS

Ego: Thus, he agreed and sacrifices his feeling towards Mira for
a while so that he will get his happiness with Mira for the rest of his life. Freud's theory, -Amins Id is he wanted to have sex with Reba since she is a fine woman. -Meanwhile, his superego said that he needs to control his lust. -Thus, his ego, unconsciously, agreed to the fake marriage with Reba in order to get the green card and become a good husband
