HSDPA

High Speed Downlink Packet Access Introduced within release 5 of the 3GPP specifications.

Why HSDPA? HSDPA provides a solution for achieving increased individual connection throughputs, increased total cell throughputs and reduced round trip times. Resulted in The increased individual connection throughput and reduced round trip time help to improve the quality of service experienced by the end-user. The increased total cell throughput helps the operator to increase the efficiency with which air-interface resources are used.

HSDPA is associated with packet switched services rather than circuit switched services. Packet switched services can be either Non-real time (NRT) or Real time (RT). Example NRT services are email, file transfer and internet browsing. An example RT service is Voice over IP (VoIP).

An HSDPA connection can be used to transfer both the user plane data originating from an end-user application and the control plane signalling originating from the RRC layer. Alternatively, an HSDPA connection can be used to transfer the user plane data while a DPCH is used to transfer the control plane signalling.
