Chapter 21

London does not belong to me

summary
Its Christmas Eve. The narrator sending cards to Guy, Derek and Beatrice. He is on his way to meet Steve. Steve is actually having a party at his place (Johns). He then sees an Indian with a man smoking a pipe, he remembered about Tristam and Gopal. (They had a picture together at the asylum, Tristam with a pipe while talking with Gopal on a bench). Beatrice is the one who took the picture, she is working for organisation for the mentally unbalance. The narrator seems surprise by it and try to hide it from Tristam.

Steve and the narrator talk about Tristam, Beatrice, Arlette, Dickie. Then the others come; Fiona, Dickie, Arlette, and Beatrice Steve, Fiona, Dickie and Arlette go to the kitchen to help John while Beatrice and the narrator stay. Beatrice and the narrator have a dull conversation then Beatrice asks the narratoe to go out with her because the party is going to be a boring one. The narrator declines it because hes afraid that Steve might be offended by it.

They then talk about the picture that she took for Tristam and Gopal at the asylum. The narrator seems to fix the awkwardness by asking Beatrice to go out but Beatrice does not want it anymore. Steve, Fiona, Arlette and Dickie then come to join Beatrice and the narrator back. The doorbell then rings and they all seems surprise and stare at the door at once. Then come Ken with Cordelia. Beatrice squeezes the narrators hand and her grip tightens even more that it hurts him.

Beatrice and the narrator then check John out at the kitchen then the three of them brings out the dishes. Cordelia then asks the narrator how is he doing and only a short simple reply from him, So.So. They then start the feast by having a toast first. The narrator becomes dizzy due to drinking.

Chapter 22
London does not belong to me

summary
The narrator actually was drunk and had a riotous time,shouting and banging table anf finally fell asleep. Narrator wakes up to find that the party was over and everyone had left. Steve persuaded narrator to stay back but ,he insisted going back to his apartment. Steve accompanied narrator back to his apartment Steve put up a night in narrators. Steve,then tried to seduce the narrator by asking him to kiss him. Obiviously narrator was shocked but he tried to keep calm.Narrator dismisses Steve by telling him that dont be silly,you are really tipsy tonight. Steve senses the fear in narrator.

Steve said how love was universal and pointed out that if narrator could love him tonight,he wont lose Cordelia. Love is all giving ,he said. He said that Ken,Beatrice and Cordelia all love him in their own way. Steve also told him that he should find a substitute for Cordelia. Finally,he gave some philosophical ideas on how the core of their happiness is selfishness and he thought he can break the barrier with the narrator tonight. But, steve concluded that,perhaps his pride and narrators fear prevented it.

Chapter 23

PLOT
Exposition: Narrator is sitting in a train and on his way back home Rising action Tristam gave him a book, London belongs to me by Norman Collins So.. You are going at lastThis is for you.Open it. (pg 285,para 2 line 1 and line 4) Tristam pointed out Gopal wanted to bid farewell too,but he was still in bed with flu. He wanted to come very much.Still in bed with flu.(pg 285,para 3,line 6 and 7)

Climax The train started to move,and the narrator is finally leaving.T Tristam presses his hands and gave it a hard squeeze .(pg,286,para 4,line 6 and 7)

Denoument Beatrice had written saying that she was down with flu and asked narrator to excuse her absence. She also added that Ken had to leave the country for possessing obsene articles,hinting darkly that it was actually the work of Dickies. (pg 286,para 6)
