Rules & Practice

Lets start!

Negative prefixes are an addition to many words. They are placed at the beginning and convey the meaning of NO, that is, they turn the word into its opposite.

Look at the example: ABLE means capable UNABLE means incapable (not able)

There are several negative prefixes, but no rules to choose them, as each one goes with certain words and not with others, so the best idea is to use your dictionary. These are the main prefixes: UnInIr IlImDisNonADe Anti-

Actually, three of the prefixes are the same one in different forms, depending on the letter that follows it:

IN- It changes to il- before adjectives beginning with l.

It changes to im- before adjectives beginning with m and p. It changes to ir- before adjectives beginning with r.

Un- is the only prefix of English origin, but it combines with many non-native words, too.

Lets practise now!
