CONTENTS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Introduction Description Table of requirements Packing and marking Sampling Methods of test for skin powders for infants
INTRODUCTION:
Baby powders are intended to make the infant feel more comportable and to help prevent skin rashes arise from the excessive moisture. Infant powders are usually only lightly perfumed or not perfumed at all. This reduces the risk of sensitization and irritation. Stearates , colloidal clay, starch and talc are the common ingredients used in baby powders. Baby powders are must be free from boric acid.
DESCRIPTION:
finely powdered, free flowing, absorbent material such as talc completely free from grit. It may contain mild perfume.
TABLE OF REQUIREMENTS:
CHARACTERERSTIC 1.Matter insoluble in boiling water (% by mass) 2.Fineness a. Residue on 75 seive NLT-90
REQUIREMENTS
NMT-2.5
NMT-0.5
NMT-2 5.5-8 NMT-20 ppm.
Marking
Name of the material Manufacturers name or trademark Netmass of material
Add 5 ml of rectified spirit Ignite and observe the flame The flame does not have a green outer edge and the material is free from boric acid.
weigh about 1g of the material and transfer to 500 ml beaker If necessary, wet the material with little amt of rectified spirit
Add 200 ml of water and boil Allow to settle and filter the supernated liq through gooch crucible Wash the residue with water and filter
CalculationMatter insoluble in boiling water = 100M1/M where M1 = mass in g of the residue M = mass in g of the material taken for the test
DETERMINATION OF FINENESS
Place about 10g of the material, accurately weighed, in the specified seive and wash by means of running tap water untill as much material as would pass through the seive as has possible. In case the material is not wetted with water, the washing should be start with by using filtered denatured sprit. let the water drain and then dry the seive on steam bath. Transfer the residue to a watch glass and dry it to constant mass at 105 2C.
Material retained on the specified seive (% by mass)= where M1 = mass in g of the residue M = mass in g of the material taken for the test
100M1/M
DETERMINATION OF PH OF AQ SUSPENSION
Take 10 g of material in150ml beaker. Add 90ml of freshly boiled and cooled water. Stirr well to make a suspension. Determine the pH of the suspension by using pHmeter with in 5 min. In case of a material which does not wet, the pH shall be determined on the filterate.
