Initiative 1- Quality Training & Employee Motivation


1a. Quality Training
Persons responsible: Q.Y., X.L. C.X. Chen Initiative was to give workers lessons in metallurgical principles, as well as training on TQM. The agenda was to improve the workers understanding of the science of thermal treatment ; Develop an increased sense of the need for Professionalism as well as quality. Who would deliver the training- Technicians from the Training Dept. Total training time for each employee- 6 hours

1b. Employee Motivation
Persons responsible: Zhang Lin and K.F. Chen Existing system was modified to provide workers with a stronger incentive system to ensure high-quality DGS production. New Standard Failure Rate of 3 % was proposed initially (based on historical defect rate, perceived difficulty of implementing the changes an market demand) Condition: If the 3% defect rate was exceeded, the entire workshop would be penalized. In a given month, each worker started with a max. 100 quality points by default. Every 1% failure rate over the said standard, one point would be deducted from the accumulated bonus quality points. This proposal met with resistance from the Heat Treatment Dept. manager, arguing that this standard was too aggressive and negotiated a higher standard of 5%. Results after a short trial: Out of 365 units tested, 22 units were found defective (defect rate of 6%)
