Persatuan Sains dan Matematik Malaysia
Latar Belakang

Persatuan Sains Matematik Malaysia (PERSAMA) telah
ditubuhkan pada tahun 1970 oleh sekumpulan ahli yang
berminat di Universiti Malaya untuk menggantikan
Persatuan Sains Matematik Malaya yang berkubur yang
sebelum itu telah memberikan khidmat di kedua-dua
negara, Malaya dan Singapura. Pada mulanya Persatuan ini
hanya mempunyai 42 orang ahli, hampir kesemuanya dari
Universiti Malaya. Kini Persatuan mempunyai jumlah ahli
yang sekitar 300 orang yang terdiri daripada ahli akademik
dan guru sekolah seluruh negara tidak termasuk pelajar
dan institusi.

Meletakkan sains matematik dan ilmuannya ke tahap
yang unggul dalam pengartikulasian, pencanggihan,
penerokaan, penyatuan ilmu dan pembinaan insan.

Matlamat

Untuk mengekalkan status dan memajukan minat orang ramai
terhadap bidang sains matematik.
Untuk melaksanakan kemajuan dalam pengajaran sains matematik.
Untuk menyediakan kaedah komunikasi antara pelajar, guru dan lain-
lain yang berminat di dalam bidang matematik dan pengajaran
matematik.
Untuk memelihara minat dalam pengajaran dan penglibatan sains
matematik serta kepenggunaannya.
Untuk mengambil langkah-langkah yang difikirkan berguna bagi
mengembang pandangan-pandangan persatuan berhubung dengan
sebarang persoalan yang mempunyai kesan terhadap pembelajaran
dan pengajaran sains matematik.

Mission Statement
A mission statement encapsulates an organizations
purpose and communicates its essence to members,
stakeholders, and the public. It states why the organization
exists, what it seeks to accomplish, what it does to achieve
this end, and the ultimate result of its work.

NCTM Mission Statement
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a public
voice of mathematics education, supporting teachers to
ensure equitable mathematics learning of the highest
quality for all students through vision, leadership,
professional development, and research.

Vision Statement
A vision statement is a guiding image of an organizations success and
the resulting contribution to society. A vision statement describes
the best possible outcome and what the future consequently looks
like. The purpose of a vision statement is to inspire, energize,
motivate, and stimulate creativity.

NCTM Vision Statement
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a global leader
and authority in mathematics education, ensuring that all students
have access to the highest quality mathematics teaching and
learning. We envision a world where everyone is enthused about
mathematics, sees the value and beauty of mathematics, and is
empowered by the opportunities mathematics affords.

NCTM - NCTM Foundational Priorities
Curriculum, instruction, and assessment: Provide guidance and
resources for developing and implementing mathematics curriculum,
instruction, and assessment that are coherent, focused, well-
articulated, and consistent with research in the field, and focused on
increasing student learning.
Equity: Advance knowledge about, and infuse in every aspect of
mathematics education, a culture of equity where everyone is
empowered by the opportunities mathematics affords.
Advocacy: Engage in public and political advocacy to focus
policymakers and education decision makers on improving learning
and teaching mathematics.
Professional Development: Provide professional development to all
stakeholders to help ensure all students receive the highest quality
mathematics education.
Research: Ensure that sound research is integrated into all activities
of the Council.

ATM- Association of Teachers of Maths
Membership of ATM is open to students, nursery, infant, primary,
secondary and tertiary teachers, numeracy consultants, overseas
teachers, academics...
ATM speaks for creativity, thought, and the enjoyment of the struggle
in calculation, reasoning and discovery...
The power to learn rests with the learner. Teaching has a subordinate
role. The teacher has a duty to seek out ways to engage the power of
the learner
*ATM offers a wide range of support and professional development

*We periodically run courses which are aimed at addressing needs
which the Association identifies. We also run sessions and day
conferences that address issues of importance to members and that
aim to further develop the quality of teaching and learning of
mathematics in primary, secondary and higher education.*

ATM- Association of Teachers of Mathematics
The Association of Teachers of Mathematics was established in 1950
to encourage the development of mathematics education such that it
is more closely related to the needs of the learner. The ATM is
governed by its General Council.
There are about 4 000 members - mainly teachers in primary and
secondary schools. It is a registered charity and all profits from
subscriptions and trading are re-invested into mathematics
education.
The ATM provides opportunities to bring together all concerned with
mathematics education for all age ranges. It supports local branches,
informal support networks, courses and conferences.
The Association of Teachers of Mathematics produces policy
statements and publishes response to National and Government
initiatives. Past statements and responses are archived here.
The ATM has a number of Working Groups whose function is to
examine particular areas of the mathematics education field to
develop policy, resources and action.
To support the teaching and learning of mathematics by:

encouraging increased understanding and enjoyment of
mathematics
encouraging increased understanding of how people learn
mathematics
encouraging the sharing and evaluation of teaching and
learning strategies and practices
promoting the exploration of new ideas and possibilities
initiating and contributing to discussion of and
developments in mathematics education at all levels
