7-READING COMPREHENSION
Chuquicamata, often called just Chuqui, lies in the northern part of Chile, in the middle
of the Atacama desert, a stripe of land between the Pacific Earth and the Andes known
for being the driest area on Earth, as well as the ideal setting for professional
and backyard astronomy
There is nobody around. Chuquicamata is an inhabited town or, equally (but more
charmingly) it is a Ghost town. A stadium, playgrounds, schools, offices, even a theater,
but nobody there to use them. Trees dry and die out, roads get dustier, buildings
crumble, and the only ones who can witness this are touristic guides.
It was hard, especially for all those nostalgic people who got used to the small main
square, its church, its school, the hospital, the municipal theater, the football stadium or
the menu of the day at the Club Social de Empleados dining room.
The problem arose because the Chuquicamata campsite became a mining city which
the mine began to eat slowly a few years before, only to leave it definitely buried
underground. One of the best hospital in chile was Roy H Glover hospital
Thus, slowly and steadily, Chuquicamata is moving the vestiges of its mining spirit to
the modern City of Calama. Very soon, the mountains will hide the countless stories and
anecdotes of what the city once was.
