Using New Media

for
Teaching & Training
As the use of computing and networking
technologies grows, educators increasingly
incorporate online tools and resources into
their curricula some even replace traditional
classroom interactions with virtual courses
that take place entirely online.
Convergence
Media convergence is a theory in
communications where every mass medium
eventually merges to the point where they
become one medium due to the advent of new
communication technologies.
In fact, today, there is no need for having a
television and a computer separate from each
other, since both are able to do the job of the
other. We also see print media eventually
collaborating with the new media.

Examples: Web TV, E-paper, Mobile Phones
Internet use is increasing at an incredible rate.
Total no. of users More than 2 Billion

We Must Change
It is not the strongest of the species that
survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one
most responsive to change. Charles Darwin
Adapting Organizations are Thriving
The title metaphor conveys the core concept: though a starfish and a spider have
similar shapes, their internal structure is dramatically differenta decapitated
spider inevitably dies, while a starfish can regenerate itself from a single
amputated leg. In the same way, decentralized organizations, like the Internet, the
Apache Indian tribe and Alcoholics Anonymous, are made up of many smaller
units capable of operating, growing and multiplying independently of each other,
making it very difficult for a rival force to control or defeat them.

Blogs & Forums
Each faculty should maintain a blog and students must be encouraged to
maintain blogs. There should be a forum where the bloggers can gather
to share information on how to get the best use of the blogs.
The blog can also be used as a platform for personal content
management system. This perspective allows us to think about blogs as
the basis for all sorts of opportunities from faculty web sites to
student e-portfolios.
Online Communities
Community blog sites or Community Hubs should be set up to act as
online notice boards and knowledge creation centres.
Youtube
YouTube is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share
videos. Three former PayPal employees created YouTube in February
2005.

In November 2006, YouTube, LLC was bought by Google Inc. for $1.65
billion, and is now operated as a subsidiary of Google.
Flickr
Flickr is an image and video hosting website, web services suite, and
online community.

In addition to being a popular website for users to share and embed
personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers to host
images that they embed in blogs and social media.
Delicious
Delicious is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and
discovering web bookmarks.

The site was founded by Joshua Schachter in 2003 and acquired by
Yahoo! in 2005. By the end of 2010, the service claimed more than 5.3
million users and 500 million unique bookmarked URLs.
Podcasts
Podcast can offer a variety of services
designed to offer faculty an easy way to
produce educational podcasts and distribute
them to their students.

These services include hands-on training,
information on locating equipment to borrow
or purchase for producing podcasts,
recommendations of the best practices for
creating pedagogical podcasts, free software
downloads necessary to create podcasts, free
accounts to begin posting podcasts, online
tutorials, and more. In addition, faculty can
also have a secure way to publish course
podcasts.
Wikis
A wiki is a software that allows web users to create a website
together and edit each others pages.

You can visit wetpaint.com which allows (and gives great
examples) of how you can use wikis for class topics and group
presentations.

The teachers and students are going to learn a great deal by
learning these softwares. This is the future of business and
learning, so the more they can learn how to use it, the better.
Video Sharing Sites
Sometimes just reading textual information can become
monotonous. Visually seeing something can be much better
understood than plain text.

There are lots of sites which provide useful video footage
for the preparation of our lesson plan or even for showing
in the classroom.

Youtube.com is probably the most popular video sharing
site but Teachertube.com is a great resource for
educational videos.
Education-Specific Search Tools
If you need to send students to a search tool or if you are looking for
filtered, student friendly sites which have search tools that are more
specific to education, then the following will help.

Yahooligans.com: A categorical search tools that indexes sites
appropriate for students viewing.

KidsClick.com: Another indexed site that is backed by librarians and has
over 600 subjects in which students can search.

TekMom.com: A one stop shop for searching. Contains a variety of
search fields that allow students/teachers to search for a wide range of
topics both in general search tools and subject specific ones.

Bluewebn.com: A site that features many resources for teachers
categorized by subject and activity type.
Teacher Communities
New websites, blogs, applications, software and trends are developed
everyday that you can use to capture students attention, but there is no
way you can teach and keep track of all the new updates at the same
time. Teacher Communities create collaboration and networking which
will be a continuing source of inspiration for new tools.

Teacherlingo.com is a great website for teachers to write helpful
articles for each other.

Teachervision.com This website saves time for teachers and
provides free resources.

Some social networking sites for teachers are
Nextgenteachers.com, Crowdvine.com and ning.com
Modern Day Pen Pals
It is a fact that students in India are less used to technology or
the virtual world than the west.

It is a good idea for a teacher to use the power of the Internet
and start a virtual pen pal project. You can make virtual penpals
and learn about what the students in other countries are
learning, specifically in the context of your subject. This will give
you a new dimension of what the students are learning in the
other part of the world.

This will also give your students a new perspective on everything
from what they are learning to the amazing opportunities they
are given here.

Try World PenPals.com or ePals.com
Some Online Applications
There are some sites online which the teachers can use in
demonstrations, for projects or even in the background for
preparation.

Google Sites (http://sites.google.com/) is a very nice online
application and actually has a classroom as one of its examples.

Have Morse Code translated onto your computer.

HowStuffWorks.com is a very interesting site which searches
anything you are teaching in class and it has an explanation and
videos also.

Twitter is starting a new site for teachers (twitter.com). Twitter is
very popular with teens right now it allows users to follow each
other and post 140 character snippets of what they are doing.
Dipity
It is a free service that allows you to
add multiple social media accounts into
one tracking panel. Dipity watches for
updates in real time and puts them
together in one place. You can view the
aggregation as a timeline with zoom
features, as a flipbook like the iTunes
coverflow, or as a list or map. Each
view allows you a brief overview of the
Tweet, video, news article or image,
and lets you view the full media asset,
provides additional information and
provides sharing features and access
to the original source. You can follow
any profile to receive e-mail updates or
embed the widget in any Website or
Blog with your chosen profile.
Twitterfall
Twitterfall is a Twitter visualization tool that aggregates (pulls in)
Twitter feeds based on a specific keyword or hash tag. When
you enter your search parameters, you instantly can view
conversations on various topics taking place in real time
throughout the world. Each Tweet that is pulled into Twitterfall
pushes the previous one down, creating a virtual waterfall of
communication
Cooliris
Cooliris is a Web-based media aggregator that provides an
interactive browsing experience on both computers and select
mobile devices. It pulls images and video content from sites like
YouTube, Flickr, and Facebook into a streaming wall of content.
To control Cooliris, you can use the slider at the bottom of the
Web application to scroll left or right, or simply grab and drag the
wall to move it. Click on an image to enlarge it or click on a video
to play it. When you are finished, click outside of the grid to
minimize the view.
YouTube Warp
This visualization allows you start with
one YouTube video of your choice and
shows you the related videos as circles
surrounding your video preview.
Rolling over any video preview will
show you its title, user-rating, length of
time and let you play it in context. If
you hover over any of the related
previews, videos relating to that video
pop up. This alternate relationship
browser uses the same tagging
relationship model as the standard
YouTube interface, but allows visitors
to browse in a more organic way. The
videos you may stumble across can
open your eyes to new information in
your interest area.
