FASHION BEFORE FASHION CAME

Before the 13
th
Century
clothing was not for
beauty but for use.
However, after 13
th

century, due to success
of trade in parts of
Europe, mainly Italy,
clothes began to take
new designs. It became a
sign of wealth.

Louis XIV began the fashion
revolution in France when since
wealth symbol was very
important to him. In his period,
one important factor in mens
fashion was a wig of curled hair.
By 1600s, a large portion of the
French economy was derived
from clothing and dressmaking
goods.

NAPOLEANS CONTRIBUTION
When Napoleon came into rule
in 1804, the French
economy was destroyed
after 15 years of war.
He did two things to improve
French economy using
fashion industry-
Prevented import of
material to make dresses.
He then instructed that no
one could come to French
court in the same dress two
times.

Start of modern French fashion
The peak of the fashion
industry was reached
when Napoleon IIIs wife
Eugenia of Spain (queen
from 1853) supported
the work of Charles
Frederick Worth, an
English designer, who
became owner of the
Worth House of
Fashion. Initially. Worth
worked in grocery shop.
Charles Frederick Worth
Worth was called father
of haute
couture(fashion made
to fit one particular
person, made with
expensive fabric).He
was the first designer
to show his clothes on
live models, the first to
put his name on a
label inside the clothes
and the first to set a
schedule for showing
seasonal clothes.

World Wars and French fashion
Many fashion houses closed during
occupation of Paris during the World
War II, including the Maison Vionnet
and the Maison Chanel.
Due to the difficult times, to save
material, evening wear was shortened
and day wear was much lighter, made
using substitute materials whenever
possible. From 1940, no more than
thirteen feet (four meters) of cloth was
permitted to be used for a coat and a
little over three feet (one meter) was all
that allowed for a blouse.
In this period, hats were often made of
scraps of material that would have
otherwise been thrown away,
sometimes incorporating butter muslin,
bits of paper, and wood shavings.

Post war

Post-war fashion
was
characterised by
dresses with tiny
waists, majestic
chests, and full
skirts swelling
out beneath
small bodices.

Regulation of fashion standards
The expression Haute couture is, in France, a legally
protected name, guaranteeing certain quality
standards.
French couture is regulated by an industry governing
body, the Fdration franaise de la couture, du prt--
porter des couturiers et des crateurs de mode created
in 1973, which itself consists of the Chambre Syndicale
de la mode masculine (men's fashion), the Chambre
syndicale du prt--porter des couturiers et des
crateurs de mode (ready-to-wear) and the Chambre
syndicale de la haute couture (high fashion), the latter
having been created in 1868.
