IDEAS TO IDENTIFY
1. Music video demonstrates genre characteristics.
2. There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.
(Either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting)
3. There is a relationship between the music and the visuals.
(Either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting)
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for
lots of close-up of the artists and the artist may develop
motifs which recur across their work (e.g. a visual style)
5. There are frequent references to the notion of looking
(screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly
voyeuristic (sexual) treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertextual references (to films, TV programs,
other music videos, etc)
7. Whether the video is primarily performance-based, narrative
based or concept based and how each element is used in it.
MUSIC VIDEOS DEMONSTRATE
GENRE CHARACTERISTICS
Electronic or chill trap music is portrayed in this music
video by the abstract or surreal ideas. For example; the
mise-en-scene of a pink background immediately denotes
the abstract theme. However, this is also dependent to
the type of music video as some chill trap music videos
are narrative based.

The lighting on the bodies of the protagonists also denote
some aspects of chill trap. The use of the colour dark
purple and red furthermore denotes the abstract type
music video which is often found within this genre.

THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN THE LYRICS AND THE
VISUALS
Disclosure You and Me (Flume Remix) is a concept-based music
video. The concept of passion is signified through the relationship of the
lyrics and visuals.

Its gonna be you and me would be the main lyric that the music video
focuses on. As it immediately begins with the lyrics the first frame
presents the male character who stands alone, portraying a relationship
between the lyric you. As the word me is then said; the female
protagonist enters the shot synchronous to the audio and creates a clear
link to the line, this also identifies the protagonist symbolizing the artist.

The visuals then denote the idea of a dream. One could argue that the
the mise-en-scene of a pink and soft focus background connotes the
dream by constructing a surreal setting. Also since there are two
protagonists this may further emphasize the dream as there are no other
characters throughout the video. The lyric its going to be everything you
ever dreamed highlights a stereotype that males desire a specific
female with a want to kiss her. The idea of romance and love is
furthermore symbolized by the pink as it often connotes this theme.
You and me'

. The use of a POV shot for the lyrics gives the
audience the view from the protagonists.

As the lighting changes this signifies the
protagonists amplifying their desire for one
another. The lack of mise-en-scene and colour
black allows the audience to focus on each
protagonist in the eyes of the characters.
Furthermore the protagonists skin keeps the
concept of love or passion completely between
the two, connoted by the red.
Everything

One may argue that the visuals both amplify and
contradict the concept of passion in these two
frame.

The silhoutte of the two protagonists amplify the
idea of 'everything' as the lighting outlines the
body language. It can be connoted as a
metaphor, that throughout anything the
protagonists encounter they will continue to be
together. Maintaining their passion.

However one may also argue that the symbolic
code of dark lighting signifies its binary opposite
of nothing instead.

THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN THE MUSIC AND THE
VISUALS
There is a strong relationship between the music and the visuals throughout the whole music video. The
editing and sound are synchronous and in return the music video becomes natural and run smoothly to the
song.

As the protagonists kiss, the beat drops (where there is a change of rhythm) and the lighting changes. This
is seen as the climax or the equilibrium. There is emphasized through the burst or flicker of high key lighting
with the editing beginning the relationship between the music and visuals.

Following that, within a space of a second there is a silhouette of the main characters where the lighting
again changes, revealing there intimacy between the characters. The lighting, plays a huge part in the music
video as it is used to draw attention to the protagonists.
The editing is continuous throughout the song, the same editing techniques are used with small differences.
Here, the close-up shots
of the protagonists are
edited in slow-motion.
However, it still amplifies
the concept of passion.
The close-ups allow the
audience to see the
physical contact of the
protagonists. Yet still
remains synchronous to
the sound with the flickers
of light, from the editing.
The lighting flickers
on and off in
harmony with the
beat. This is the
equilibrium in the
music video before
the sound gets to a
fast pace.
The continuity of the
editing can furthermore be
seen here as the lighting
is harmonized with the
beat of a clapping sound.
This is also in the
beginning of the video but
is presented differently
through the lighting.
THE DEMANDS OF THE RECORD LABEL WILL
INCLUDE THE NEED FOR LOTS OF CLOSE-UP
OF THE ARTISTS AND THE ARTIST MAY
DEVELOP MOTIFS WHICH RECUR ACROSS
THEIR WORK
There is a lack of recurring visual styles as the artist has produced little music videos and the
record label he is signed to have differing genres.

However the visual style of the theme pink also links to another music video of his Holdin On. This
also has a filtered effect of pink and purple to create a link in his work. An active fan may denote
this and could connote that there is an idea of love in his work. Another video Sleepless by Flume
also runs a similar idea of using both male and female protagonists as the female character
dreams about the male. This links to theme of passion/dream in this music video.
THERE ARE FREQUENT REFERENCES TO
THE NOTION OF LOOKING AND
PARTICULARLY VOYEURISTIC
TREATMENT OF THE FEMALE BODY.
Voyeurism is seen throughout the music however it is not specific to the female body alone but
both genders. This is portrayed through the naked protagonists and the mise-en-scene; both
bodies are denoted shiny and flawless with the make-up. On top of that the harsh lighting also
helps emphasize their bodies to the audience, giving a voyeuristic treatment. Here, the audience
are engaged to look at the characters with attention focusing on the characters bodies and is
further emphasized through POV shots. This also shows the perspective of the artist and the
director, the subverted stereotype of the voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

THERE IS OFTEN INTERTEXTUAL
REFERENCES
There are two primary references that an active audience can denote. The first text would be from the
original artist before the remix Disclosure, in his music video Latch. There is a clear link with his work,
not only is the main concept of Flume based around the artists music video but the way editing is done
also. The slow-motion editing and several close-ups of characters kissing one another is a direct link to
the artist Disclosure.

The second reference can be made to Adam and Eve. The use of nudity but done so tastefully with
creative direction and not for explicit purposes can be thought of. Moreover the fact there are only two
protagonists; both male and female connotes this.
WHETHER THE VIDEO IS PRIMARILY
PERFORMANCE-BASED, NARRATIVE
BASED OR CONCEPT BASED AND HOW
EACH ELEMENT IS USED IN IT
The video may be viewed as concept based where the concept of passion is amplified. Concept videos
are particularly difficult to be successful, they must focus on one or two ideas alone. This music video
keeps the audience engaged with the use of technical and symbolic aspects; the lighting and editing
playing a major role. The lack of characters amplifies the chemistry between two protagonists which the
audience must denote.

Furthermore there is a sense of equilibrium in the middle of the music video and change in lighting to
keep the music video successful in its concept.
From studio lighting to no lighting.
Lack of characters around the
protagonists / centered protagonists
to keep the audience focused.
