Intentions

In order to do this production, I will have to consider

certain aspects to produce my production successfully. I
am challenged to produce a documentary showing the
benefits and importance of higher education for all.
•I will be exploring how Higher education can benefit a
young persons future,
future in terms of getting a good career
and also how recession can not always be an issue for a
graduated person.
•The intentions of doing this documentary, is to show the
importance of Higher Education to my Young target
audience, aged between 16-24 years old, promoting
towards a BBC audience.
Content of Idea
Unique selling Point: I certainly have not seen any documentaries with similar or
same concept, however I have seen some documentaries based on education, but
it did not had the same angle.

This means I have taken an unusual topic and so therefore the audience will be
interested to watch it, as I will be exploring my conception in a sophisticated way,
in order to drag the audience to watch this.

 To make it as an unique selling point, I will be using distinctive elements for my

production to make it more attractive, these conventions include: appropriate
presenters, music, Vox pop, locations and so on…

I will be showing the emphasis on Higher education, which allows the audience
to look at individuals personal perspective , because the aim of this documentary
is only to show the importance of higher education.

However also I am not going to look at key arguments,

Structure & Running Order
For instance in my pre-production work, I have created a contact list,
where I can put down all the people that could interview and then select
those people who are necessary for my documentary.

These are: headmaster of CHFS, University students, College students,

Head of sixth form , Employment agency, Job centre.

These contact people are attainable, where I have thoroughly

researched

order to attract my target audience.

Explanation of Research & Key Findings
In my pre-production work, I had to do some researches before entering the
production stage. Through these investigations, I have found out some clear
qualitative and quantitative data's. This may help in the production stage, in terms of
content it has to be realistic with facts and figures.
BBC Magazine Show Observations: Even though this is not exactly part of research, however I do
believe it is some kind of a research. The reason behind this observation is to have an idea how a magazine
show runs, which includes like documentaries. and also, according to the brief I have to broadcast a
documentary which has to aim at BBC audience. Through this I have seen different conventions that can be
sued in my production.

Content research: This research is the most important part of my entire production. This type of research
has allowed me to collect some qualitative and quantitative information about my topic, as I had only a basic
idea about my motif. The aim of the actual content research was to have an idea what the topic is about. For
instance I looked at benefits of higher education, in order to see if there is enough elements that I could
explore. The method I used for this type of research, I have utilised the internet as part of secondary
research. This is the convenient way of finding out about Higher education.

Textual Analysis: This is another secondary research which I have done, by using the internet (YouTube),
Frankly, it was quite hard to find similar programme to mine, it wasn’t easy as I thought. The reason for doing
this research was to look at similar documentaries that has got the same content as mine or which has got
something to do with HE. This type of research gave me an idea how represent my programme. Furthermore,
I have seen formal and informal presentations by the presenters.

Legal & Regulatory Considerations
In my pre-production work, I had to research about
the BBC’s editorial guidelines, in order to make my
production successfully, which has to meets all the
regulations and limitations.
How does these guideline effect my product?
BBC editorial guideline:
The BBC editorial guideline informs us about the audience’s
need and what can be broadcasted and what not. It also tells
about the BBC’s limitations where have to meet their
conditions such as: truth and accuracy, Serving the public
interest, privacy, fairness and so on… It is very important
when I am in my production process I will have to consider
all these regulations.
Media Law:
They make sure that all the broadcaster meet all the
conditions and don’t offend the public such as privacy and
confidence, copyright.
OFCOM’s Regulations:
Commercial Viability
•The Market:
Before finalizing my initial concept, I have done some research about my key concept. As part of
this research I wanted to find out whether there are any similar concepts on the market or whether
there are any who compete for the same audience as my documentary. Therefore, having
thoroughly researched about this, I couldn’t find any similar key concept to mine.
•My Budget:
In my pre-production work I’ve created Budget Sheet, on excel. This allowed me to see about the
financial circumstances and it gave me an idea how much I will have to spend for my entire
process. For my production process, I am going to use equipments from my school’s media
department. Therefore, I don’t need to pay for certain things like camera equipment, but i will
have to pay if I have to go out and film for my documentary, which is the travelling charge and
maybe permission for the location and the filming permit UK.
•Distribution and Exhibition:
My key concept is based on importance of higher education and my aim is to make this
documentary informative, educative and entertaining. How I will do this is by having varies
conventions which targets with these three ethos. As the age group is aged between 16-24,
therefore this programme will be broadcasted after 9pm, on BBC.
•How will it Inform, Educate & Entertain?
Questions for YOU…

1. Are you considering going to University?

Why?
2. Do you think there are any positive or
negative arguments towards this?
3. Do you think Recession has affected an
individuals view on HE?
4. Are there any important aspects that
should be considered?
Feedback from my
audience…
 When I asked my audience whether they are interested to go to University,95% of people
replied saying that they are planning to go to University. This clearly means that this
documentary will be quite beneficial to most my target audience.

 Asking whether there are any pros or con they all came up with recession and being
unemployed after graduating. The positive argument for this is that University has got
more opportunities than any other kind of institutions and it is better to get a good job.

 Talking about Recession to them, they said that Recession has become an issue today
because of the economical industry. The term Recession does make a person to think
about their future.

 It has also changed many students mind, in terms of going to University.
