Geotextiles are the permeable

textile materials.
It may be natural materials such
as jute or coir.
Or synthetic polymers such as
polypropylenes polyesteres
polyethylenes polyamides.

JUTE GEOTEXTILES

COIR GEOTEXTILES

INSTALLATION OF GEOTEXTILES

Installing geotextile over soft subgrade soil

Geotextile covered by
base course material

Levelling the base

course material

Curing the geotextile pavement

Compacting the geotextile pavement

POST CONSTRUCTION

1. SEPARATION
2. FILTERATION
3. DRAINAGE
4. REINFORCEMENT
5. SEALING FUNCTION

SEPARATION

SEPARATION
Geotextiles is sandwiched between aggregate base
course and subgrade material.
It prevents mixing of the two layers, aggregate loss
and pumping.

DRAINAGE
Drainage applications
refer to situations where
the water flows within
the plane of the
Geotextiles product .
Prevents water logging
in the pavement
structure

REINFORCEMENT
It helps in maintaining
the pavement integrity
and uniformity.
It reduces the
differential settlement
in roadways

Jute Geotextile as drainage of JoshimathMallari

Road , Himachal Pradesh, India
Km 5.6 on SH- 45 in UP. Experienced subsidance and
sinking during monsoons.
Remedial measure suggested: systematic network of road
side trenches & cross trench drains.
No further sinking till date.

Jute fibre used in road construction

Plants growing through Jute Geotextile

which where laid for slope stability

ADVANTAGES
Reduces the intensity of stress on the
sub grade
Prevents the base aggregate penetration.

Prevents subgrade fines from pumping.

Extent the life of pavement.

Reduces the differential settlement.

Reduces maintenance.

CONCLUSION
GEOTEXTILES IS AN EFFICIENT METHOD OF
SOLVING MOST OF THE GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS
IN ROADS.
IT IS AN ECONOMICAL ANSWER TO SOLVE THE
PROBLEMS OF EROSION.
THEY ARE HARD, STRONG AND DO NOT REQUIRE
ANY PRE TREATMENT.
THEY ARE ECO FRIENDLY.
