Telecommunication networks carry electrical signals of speech, video
etc. from source to destination
At the destination, the electrical signals are converted back into
equivalent speech, video etc

Switching Network
Basic Functions of a Telephone switch
21
Terminate all Access lines
Send dial tone ( when subscriber lifts the telephone- off hook)

e TOM
28
What is eTOM?
It stands for Enhanced Telecom Operations Map
It is a business process framework i.e. a reference framework or model for
categorizing all the business activities that a service provider will use
It is part of NGOSS initiative
Why is it a business process framework?
Because its aim is to Categorize process elements and business activities so that these can then be
combined in many different ways
Implement end-to-end business process like fulfillment, assurance, billing
which deliver value for the customer and service provider
29
Use of eTOM
Service Providers
Serves as blue print for process direction
Telco Industry standards neutral reference point
Internal process reengineering needs
Partnerships & Alliances
General working agreement with other enterprises
Suppliers
Outlines potential boundaries of Process Solution
Required functions, inputs and outputs that must be supported by process
solution
Tool
Identify redundant business processes & eliminate duplication
Identify gaps
Speed up new process design
30
eTOM Framework
31
Benefits of Using eTOM Framework
32
Makes available a standard structure, terminology & classification for describing
business processes and their constituent building blocks
Supplies foundation for applying enterprise-wide discipline to the development of
business processes
Provides basis for understanding & managing portfolios of IT applications in terms of
business process requirements
Its use enables consistent and high-quality end-to-end process flows creation with
opportunity for cost & performance improvement and for re-use of the existing
processes & systems
Its use across the industry will increase the likelihood that off-the-shelf applications
will be readily integrated into the enterprise at low cost
Matrix Architecture
BTs OneIT enterprise architecture.
33
Definition
34
The Matrix architecture has at its foundation a set of IT platforms. These platforms will,
deliver the IT capabilities required by the BT enterprise to run its business in collaboration
with its partners.
Key Objectives
Accelerate product development cycles, from an average of 18 months to less than six
months.
Enhance the experience BTs customers receive from the company and its services, by
making it much easier to buy and configure their services.
Deliver growing annual cash cost savings reaching an additional 1 billion per year from
2008/09 (compared to 2002/03) by reducing complexity in BTs networks and systems and
streamlining business processes.

Matrix Equivalence Architecture
Scenarios
If we consider an order for a regulated product,
the service provider (e.g. AOL) would place the
order with BT for the regulated product.
The service provider order would:
1. come into BT via the Collaboration Platform;
2. be managed as a customer order on the
Customer Management Platform;
3. be decomposed into bill of materials on the
Convergent Operations Platform and the
service components fulfilled as appropriate from
the Service Management Platforms;
4. be billed from the Billing & Payments Platform
The BT Retail customer order would:
1. come into BT via the Collaboration Platform;
2. be managed as a Retail customer order on the
Customer Management Platform
3. be decomposed into bill of materials on the
Convergent Operation Platform, non regulated
products would be fulfilled as appropriate by the
Service Management Platforms, however
regulated products would be passed back
through the
Collaboration Platform now as a BT Retail
Service Provider order which would follow
sequence 1-4 as outline in service provider
scenario above;
4. be billed from the Billing & Payments
Platform.
