What is Language?

Language is a system of arbitrary, vocal symbols which permit all people

in a given culture, or other people who have learned the system of that
culture, to communicate or to interact (Finocchiaro, 1964: 8). Which
means that language is like an instrument that able the humankind to
communicate with each other in order to express ideas or emotion that
they have in mind.

What is Figure of Speech?

Figure of speech which often called a rhetorical figure is a form of single

word or phrase that commonly its the opposite of a literal expression.
That means something more or something other than it seems to say.
Also it can be a special repetition, arrangement or omission of words..

Scholars of classical Western rhetoric have divided figures of speech into

two main categories: schemes and tropes. In linguistics schemes is a
figure of speech that change the words arrangement in a sentence, can
be exemplify with a repetition like alliteration, a series of words that
begin with the same letter or sound alike. A literary trope is the use of
an expression for an artistic effect, for example like irony, the use of
words to convey the opposite of literal meaning.

What is Pleonasm?

Pleonasm is a phenomenon which occurs at all levels of linguistic

analysis and language processing, including discourse, morphology,
syntax, and semantics.

According to Nida and Taber (2003:207), a pleonasm is an expression in

which for structural reasons information is explicit more than once which
is not necessary for communication.

An instance of pleonasm like an expression of serious danger, down

south, free gift.

Type of Pleonasm

Syntatic Pleonasm: Occurs when the grammar of a language makes

certain function words optional.
Example: I know you are coming and I know that you are coming

Semantic Pleonasm is question more of style and usage than of

grammar.
Example: The plumber fixed our hot water heater.

Morphemic Pleonasm is redundancies in a word structure.

Example: publicly and publically

Movies

Movies are a type of communication media with visual and sound to tell
stories and inform the audience. People in every part of the world enjoy
movies as an entertainment. Beside all of the fun that came out of
movies, its also have an amazing influence to the audience, either from
the story of a movie or the actors who play the role, both has influence
to some audience.

Problems of the study

The problems of this study are:

Compare the type of pleonastic expression that mostly used in both

movies.

What are the reason of using pleonastic expression?

Is there a change of meaning after minimize the pleonastic expressions?

Significance of the study

The results of this study hopefully will give both theoretical and practical
contribution to the people. Theoretically the result of this study can be
useful to the people who is majoring in figure of speech, especially in
pleonasm. Practically the result of this study can be a guidance for
students of Bina Darma University, especially for the English
department, to make a better understanding about pleonasm.
