 The Blackbird and the Cherry Tree

Once upon a time there was a blackbird that lived in a cherry tree outside my
window. Every day, the blackbird would sing and sing. When I ate my breakfast, the
blackbird ate his breakfast. When I ate my lunch, the blackbird ate his lunch. When I
ate my dinner, the blackbird ate his dinner. When I had a snack, the blackbird had a
snack, too. The blackbird always ate the cherries off the cherry tree outside my window.

One day, mother was going to make a cherry pie. We picked all the cherries off the
cherry tree outside my window. Mother made the pie. Mother washed the cherries, and
then she put them in the crust to bake. When it was baked, she put the pie by the
window to cool off. She opened the window. I was eating my breakfast. I saw the
blackbird fly around the tree. There were no cherries on the tree. I saw the blackbird
fly in through the window to sit by me. He flew over to the window by the the pie. I
smiled. The blackbird looked at me. He smiled. The blackbird said, “I’ll have my pie
without ice cream!” And with that, the blackbird took the pie under his wing and flew out
the window. He flew up to the cherry tree to hide. I saw him as he hid the cherry pie in a
little hole in the tree. “That blackbird stole the cherry pie!” I shouted. “That blackbird
stole the pie!”

When I looked outside, I saw the blackbird eating the whole pie! He was eating the
crust! He was eating the cherries! Soon, it was all gone. Now, we both smiled.

NARRATIVE
 The Moon

The Moon goes around the Earth. This is called an “orbit”.

The same side of the Moon always faces the Earth. It
takes one month for the Moon to go around the Earth.
The Moon is a little more than 200,000 miles from the
Earth. It is about ¼ the size of the Earth. That means the
Earth is four times larger than the Moon.
EXPOSITORY
 The Best Pet

My friend Ann says her pet is better than mine! I have a brown cat
named Fluffy. Ann has a black and white dog named Spot. We each think our
pet is the best. I told Ann that cats are better pets because they are clean,
quiet and very cute. Cats wash themselves with their tongues. You don’t have
to walk them. They use a litter box. Also, cats are sweet and quiet. I think
dogs are too noisy! They bark a lot. They don't clean themselves or use a
litter box. Dogs need someone to give them baths, train them and walk them.
Dogs are more work. Ann says that cats are no fun! She says that dogs are
better to play with.

Spot always wags his tail when he sees her. He can even do tricks. He
barks when she says, “Speak”. He knows how to roll over! Ann says dogs are
also better because they protect their owners. Spot always barks when
there is someone at the door. It makes Ann feel safe.

So, Ann thinks dogs are best. I guess Ann’s dog is pretty cool, but so is
Fluffy. Maybe different kinds of pets are good for different people.
ARGUMENTATIVE
 My pet

I used to have a very special pet. She was a very

cute cat. My dad gave it to me for my birthday. I
named her Gucci because she was as cute as the
clothes. Gucci was very beautiful. She had white
fluffy fur, one blue eye and one green eye. She had
a little gray spot on her head and a black spot on
her tail, and she had small legs with very cute paws.
When my dad gave her to me, she was three months
old; he brought her back from one of his business
trips to Canada .
DESCRIPTIVE
 Keeping Your Hands Clean and Dry

Although some people don’t like using automatic hand

dryers in restrooms, it may actually be argued that
motion-sensing hand dryers are a practical alternative
to paper towels. More and more businesses are
investing in automatic hand dryers for their restrooms
today. For one reason, they are more sanitary than
paper towels. Secondly, they are actually cheaper than
using paper towels. Lastly, automatic hand dryers keep
the restrooms cleaner. I believe that our school would
benefit from investing in automatic motion-sensing
hand dryers in all the restrooms.
PERSUASIVE
