in Children

Background
One in three of the worlds malnourished
children lives in India.
Lack of food access not the only cause, other
factors, like access to health services, are at
play.
The present study is aimed at identifying and
analyzing the various cases of malnutrition
in the village of Khariya Patavatan.
The scope is limited to children, aged 0 6
years, residing in Khariya Patavatan.

Objectives
To classify children in accordance
with the level of malnutrition.
To assess the impact of Anganwadis
in checking the incidence of
malnutrition in children.
To acquire a caste-wise idea of
malnutrition in children.

Coverage and Sampling


Village populace resides either in main
Abadi land or Dhanis.
Only the former was covered owing to
accessibility issues with the latter.
Unavailability of children during the time
period of the survey posed a problem.
Stratified random sampling technique
was adopted with the intention of
maximising coverage.

Strata were formed on the basis of caste.
8 strata Brahmin (2), Dholi (5),
Kumawat (2), Meghwal (13), Nai (5), Naik
(18), Rajput (16) and Sunthar (2)
Households were selected based on
availability.
63 children (32 boys and 31 girls) were
sampled from the village Abadi area out
of a total of about 200.

Highlights
33 normal children, 14 cases of acute
malnourishment (AM), 16 cases of
severe acute malnourishment (SAM)
Gender-wise,
Male: 4 SAM and 5 AM out of a sampled 32
Female: 12 SAM and 9 AM out of a
sampled 31

Most cases of malnourishment occurs


in Naik caste (61%), followed by
Meghwal (54%) and Nai (40%).

Highlights
Household belonging to the main
abadi land feel that the Anganwadi is
too far to send their children to.
Malnourishment in girls increases
with their birth order.
The female child was more prone to
diarrhoea than the male child
There are more cases of
malnourishment in larger families.
