Tsunami

The example of an
Explanation

A tsunami is a very large sea wave that is generated by a

disturbance along the oceanfloor. This disturbance can be an
earthquake, a landslide, or a volcanic eruption. A tsunami
isundetectable far out in the ocean, but once it reaches shallow
water, this fast-traveling wavegrows very large.
Tsunamis occur when a major fault under the ocean floor suddenly
slips. The displacedrock pushes water above it like a giant paddle,
producing powerful water waves at the oceansurface. The ocean
waves spread out from the vicinity of the earthquake source and
move acrossthe ocean until they reach the coastline, where their
height increases as they reach the continental shelf, the part of the
Earths crust that slopes, or rises, from the oceanfloor up to the land.
Tsunamis wash ashore with often disastrous effects such as severe
flooding, loss of lives dueto drowning, and damage to property.

lowers each paw with the delicacy of aballet dancer. His
pride, however, does not extend to his appearance, for he spends
most of his time indoors watchingtelevision and growing fat.
He enjoys TV commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and
9Lives. His familiarity with cat food commercials has led him to
rejectgeneric brands of cat foodin favor of only the most
expensive brands. Gregory is as finicky about visitors as he
isaboutwhat he eats, befriending some andrepelling others. He
may snuggle up against your ankle, begging to be petted, or he
may imitate a skunk and stain your favorite trousers. Gregory
doesnot do this to establish his territory, as many cat experts
think, but to humiliate me becausehe isjealous of my friends.
After my guests have fled, I look at the old fleabag snoozing and
