WHAT IS CPT?
Chest Physical Therapy (CPT) is something you can do to help
your child breathe better. Chest physiotherapy (CPT) is a
technique used tomobilize or loosesecretions in the
lungsand respiratory tract.
Chest physiotherapy consists of external mechanical
maneuvers, such as chest percussion, postural drainage,
vibration, to augment mobilization and clearance of airway
secretions, diaphragmatic breathing with pursed-lips, coughing
and controlled coughing.
CPT is also called Percussion and Postural Drainage (P & PD).

INDICATION
Cystic Fibrosis
Bronchiectasis
Atelectasis
Lung Abses
Neuromuscular Diseases
Pneumonias in dependent lung regions

CONTRAINDICATION
Increased ICP (Intra Cranial Pressure)
Unstable head and neck injury
Active hemorrhage with hemodynamic instability or hemoptysis
Recents spinal injury or injury
Empyema
Bronchopleural Fistula
Rib Fracture
Fail chest
Uncontrolled hypertension
Anticoagulation
Rib or vertebral fracture or osteoporosis

BEFORE DOING CPT

It is best to do CPT before meals or at least one to two hours after eating. This
will make it less likely that the child will feel sick to the stomach or throw up.
The best times for CPT are early morning and at bed time.
Your doctor may prescribe medicine to open the airways.
The person doing the CPT should take off all rings and jewelry on the hands or
wrists.
If the childs clothing is tight or has thick seams, remove it.
If the child is wearing clothes with buttons, remove it.
Have the child wear a t-shirt or put a soft cloth over the spot that will be
percussed.

BENEFIT
Remove the mucus from the respiratory passages of the patient by
using specific techniques such as clapping and percussion,
promoting healthy breathing and recovery from any related health
problems.

CHEST PERCUSSION
(CLAPPING)
Chest percussion, also referred to as chest physiotherapy, is an
airway clearance technique that involves clapping on the chest
and/or back to help loosen thick secretions. Doing this makes
mucus easier to expel, or cough up. Chest percussion is often
coupled with postural drainage and vibration and can be
performed using either cupped hands or a mechanical airway
clearance device.

VIBRATION
Vibration is an airway clearance technique that, coupled with chest
percussion, is applied during postural drainage to help clear
mucus from the airways. Vibration helps to gently shake mucus
and secretions into the large airways, making them easier to
cough up. During vibration, place your flat hand firmly against the
chest wall, atop the appropriate lung segment to be drained.
Stiffen your arm and shoulder, apply light pressure and create a
shaking movement, similar to that of a vibrator.

DEEP BREATH TECHNIQUE /

EFFECTIVE COUGH
Start by taking a deep breath. Hold the breath for 2-3 seconds.
Use your stomach muscles to forcefully expel the air. Avoid a
hacking cough or merely clearing the throat. A deep cough is
less tiring and more effective in clearing mucus out of the lungs.
