DEFINITION OF TERMS
Hazardous Waste Compliance: Conforming to rules, such as
a specification, policy, standard or law, including the
resources and information needed to stay in compliance.
MPCA: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
US EPA: United States Environmental Protection Agency.
RCRA: Resource Conservation Recovery Act
Transporters: Hazardous waste transporters move waste from
one site to another by highway, rail, waterways, or air.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Waste Generator: A hazardous waste generator is a site
whose processes, manufacture and actions create hazardous
waste .Generators are divided into three categories.
Large Quantity Generators (LQGs): generate 2200 pounds or
more per month
Small Quantity Generators (SQGs): generate more than 220
pounds but less than 2200 pounds per month
Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQGs):-generate 220
pounds or less per month of hazardous waste

SITE LOCATION - 1

ABC Inc., Holdingford facility, MN - Manufactures tanks and trailers.

SITE LOCATION - 2
XYZ Inc. Albert Lea facility, MN- Produces ethanol from corn.

COMPONENT UNDER
STUDY
Hazardous waste generated at individual site location.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
ABC and XYZ are small and very small quantity generators
of hazardous waste. They have failed in effective disposal
techniques and thus not in compliance with EPA, MPCA
and RCRA guidelines.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM

Protect human health and the environment from dangers of waste disposal.

To conserve energy and natural resources through waste recycling and recovery.

To reduce the amount of waste generated.

To ensure that Hazardous wastes are managed according to environmental compliance.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

Study the operations at two different site locations

Evaluate the current status of waste.

Propose effective and economical disposal technique.

PROJECT QUESTIONS

What were the gaps identified at the two site and proposed improvements?

How is hazardous waste evaluated and categorized?

What were the different waste classifications at the two sites?

LIMITATIONS OF THE
PROJECT

Project timeline
Limited data collected

No additional budget and resources

Annual fees for license and renewal

METHODOLOGY
Evaluate waste and determine generator size.
Place waste in containers and label them.
Indoor and outdoor storage of the container.
Transport and dispose hazardous waste properly.
Prepare and distribute the manifest.
Emergency Planning and Response
Personnel training
Record keeping.

EVALUATE WASTE

DETERMINE GENERATOR SIZE

PLACE WASTE IN CONTAINERS AND LABEL

THEM

Hazardous waste must be stored in

appropriate containers.

The type of container you use depend

on the type of waste you generate.

STORAGE OF THE CONTAINERS

Containers holding hazardous waste

must be stored closed, except to add
or remove waste.

Containers must be inspected at least

weekly for possible leaks or
deterioration.

Waste may only be stored on site only

in a limited quantity for a limited time
depending on the generator size.

TRANSPORT AND DISPOSE WASTE PROPERLY

All generators are responsible for ensuring the hazardous waste transporters they use
are complying with the requirements of state and federal law.

Audits for compliance validation.

PREPARE AND DISTRIBUTE THE MANIFEST.

Proper manifestation helps ensure managed disposed in a manner that does not pose a
risk to human health or environment.

EMERGENCY PLANNING AND RESPONSE

The best preparation is prevention.

1. Emergency equipment

2. Accident prevention procedures.

3. Notify local authorities.

4. Emergency response

PERSONNEL TRAINING AND RECORD KEEPING

Yearly hands on training Hazmat or

HAZWOPER to the affected employee.

All records kept at the location where

the waste is generated and be
available for inspection.

HAZMAT / HAZWOPER TRAINING AT XYZ INC.

HAZMAT hands on training to the

employees at XYZ, Inc.
A 40 HR HAZMAT training to all the
affected employees and 8 HR consecutive
training every following year

RESULT

Process 2 Bulb transportation from supplier 2 to ABC, Inc.:

Initial process capability = 8889 PPM
Process capability after improvement = 1818 PPM

Overall supply chain:

Initial process capability = 10,985PPM
Process capability after improvement = 3914 PPM

Total improvement = 64% approx.

CONCLUSION

The improvement observed was 64% approx.

DMAIC is an effective methodology for such process improvements
