WHAT IS BIM
BIM is a digital representation of the building process to
facilitate exchange and interoperability of information in
digital format (Charles,1999).

Aim
To investigate technology adoption and awareness of Building
Information Modelling in Qatar construction industry.

Objectives
To

review by literature, the use of Building Information Modelling.

To

identify by literature, the advantages, disadvantages, how to adopt the

technology, what are the barriers to adopt and BIM awareness in the Qatar
construction sector.
To

collect data from construction professionals on BIM adaptation by

questionnaire.
To

analyse data collected by questionnaire.

To

draw conclusion and recommendation on the BIM technology adaptation and

BIM awareness within the Qatar construction industry.

RESEARCH FINDINGS

Why people avoid BIM

Control and responsibility for data

entry into the model.

No client demand.

Ownership and protection of the BIM

data.

Perceived costs.

Resistance to change.

Staff training in BIM operation.

** These findings are based on the

Why people adopt BIM

Addressed Project management

metrics.

Address whole life requirements.

Competence in BIM use.

Client/competitive pressure.

Government pressure.

research Literature review.

RESEARCH METHOD
Research strategy Quantitative research
Secondary data collection Descriptive documents
Questionnaire Construction
Section A - Profile assessment
Section B BIM Awareness & Adoption
Total 16 Questions

DATA COLLECTION

Questionnaires send off by email through survey monkey online

software.

Selected Sampling Construction Professionals those who are working

in QATAR construction companies.

Send-off the Questionnaires = Via LinkedIn

Received the questionnaires = 50 Respondents

Send off the Questionnaire = 200

Received the questionnaire = 50
Response rate = [ (50/200) x 100 ]
= 25%

DATA ANALYSE

Use Survey monkey online survey software.

Use descriptive statistical method.

Included in frequency distributions and measurement

of central tendency (the mean and mode)

Result is presented in Tables, Figures, Pie charts,

Bar charts.

CONCLUSION
BIM

is a revolutionary technology and process that has transformed

the way buildings are Designed, Analysed, Constructed and

Managed.
BIM

has communication and collaboration relationship.

Currently,

BIM use for the most Qatar large-scale projects. Qatar

University to be the first to educate BIM in the gulf region.

Proper

training programmes/knowledge and Government influence

need for the future developments to the BIM.

The

Questionnaire survey identified, most of the Qatar

Construction Professionals are happy to adopt the BIM to their

construction projects.
