INTRODUCTION
Social networking sites are web-based services allowing individuals to
construct a semi-public or public profile in a bounded system.
Maximum of the time social networking sites are used to communicate with
people who are already their friends or connections in the social network
sharing same mindset or same interests and views, discussions on
debatable topics, news articles are most common topics on these SNSs.
SNSs are not only popular for providing a platform for chatting, sharing
scraps, videos, pictures etc, but also for discussing social issues.

Thus, the rapid adoption of social network sites by youth in the United States and in
many other countries around the world raises some important questions.
Why do youth flock to these sites?
What are they expressing on them?
How do these sites fit into their lives?
What are they learning from their participation?
Are these online activities like face-to-face friendships, or are they different, or
complementary?
(Danah Boyd, 2007) Penuel and Riel define social networking as a set of
people and the relationships between them.

POSITIVE IMPACT

With Social Networks they are able to communicate with their friends whom are
unable to meet personally.

It also helps in maintaining better relationship with friends.

They can communicate their thoughts and perceptions over different topics with a
large no. of users, and raise their voice also.
It helps in creating awareness among the mass.
Social Networking web sites help in education by allowing students and teachers in
one platform.
Students get closer to art and design, and are exposed continuously to new ideas,
given a big chance to feed their creativity.
Students can get up-to-date and recent information from Social Media .

NEGATIVE IMPACT
The attention to details, attention to pronunciation and grammar, have declined
drastically, because most of the students do not write complete sentence, use proper
grammatical method while writing text/message.
Students get addicted towards Social Media, instead of spending time with family in
leisure period; they prefer chatting with online friends and unknown faces.
The more time students spend on social sites, the less they spend socializing person.
Students who spend a great deal of time on social networking are less able to
effectively communicate with person.
They also spend less time with family.
The study reveals that the active involvement of students on social sites while study
results in reduction in their focus of attention. Consequently, their academic
performances decline.
The study also reveals that the young users are engaged in chatting or surfing till
midnight which badly affects their physical as well as their mental health.
Freedom to post views and comments provides good opportunities for competitors to
post negative comments about other companies.

TRAP OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES

problem. It may be understood as a science of studying how research is done
scientifically.

RESEARCH DESIGN - Descriptive Method

DATA COLLECTION
I.

II.

Data is collected through two sources:

Primary Data- Data that has been collected from first hand experience is
known as primary data. Simple random sample technique is used to collect the
data. The primary data was collected through questionnaire method. The
questionnaire was distributed among students of MGP.G. college, Roorkee to
obtain information for my study.

Secondary Data-For the purpose of my study data has been taken from
various secondary sources like newspapers, internet, books, magazines, reports,
publications and journals.

Sample size: This study will cover the responses of 50 respondents, to find
out the impact of social networking among the youth at MGP.G. college of
Roorkee. The student will be asked to fill the questionnaire based on their
knowledge.

POPULATION:The population of the study contains youth of Roorkee.

SAMPLE FRAME: The study does not include entire population because time
required is more to find the perfect picture. Therefore the study will survey a
particular area that is ARTS & COMMERCE students of METHODIST GIRLS P.G.
COLLEGE ROORKEE.

Need Of The Study: As Social Networking is very popular among the youth , so
that they contribute the majority percentage of the users of the media. So, I wanted to
study the impact of social networking sites on youth and their education. Several
studies reveal that social networking have both positive and negative impact on
students and teenagers. Some study concludes that most of the students use social
network just to communicate with friends and it is distracting them from their studies.
The Present study helps us to identify whether social media is really distracting
students from their education or not.

FINDINGS OF THE STUDY

90% respondents use internet.
40% of respondents use SNSs up to 0-2hours daily.
54% respondents are using Facebook as favroute form of SNSs.
94% respondents agree that social networking helps todays youth in
education.
86% respondents agreed that social networking activities is a waste of time.
64% respondents agree that social networking act negatively in the
education of youth.
98% respondents agree that social networking is necessary for youth.
78% respondents agree that unwanted information creates confusions in the
minds of youth.

84% respondents agree that social networking has become a hobby of

youth.
76% respondents agree that there is both positive as well as negative impact
of social networking on youth.
100% respondents agree that social networking is helpful to create
awareness among youth.
100% respondents agree that social networking is helpful to connect with
other users.
100% respondents agree that social networking is helpful to post an
advertisement.
92% respondents agree that social networking is helpful to search business
for youth.
88% respondents agree that irrelevant and anti- religious post creates hatred
among youth of different communities.

Conclusion and Suggestion:

Social Networking websites like

Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and Youtube are becoming more and more
popular and because of their attractive features, young people are attracted to
Social Networking sites. The Study reveals that, Facebook is the most popular
sites among the youths; it provides individuals with a way of maintaining and
Strengthening social ties which can be beneficial to both social and academic
settings.
These same sites , however also become essential need today, but it should
not be motivated at all. It could ruin the future of teenagers and youth and it
had a very bad impact on education.
There is no third party or any other community which could check for what
actions has been performed by which user, so it is strongly recommended to
check childrens activities on social networks and dont let them use social
networking websites. It is also a strong recommendation for Govt. and
international cyber jurisdiction to take part and ban these types of websites, to
secure the future of youth.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Respondents dont have sufficient time to fill the questionnaire because of

time pressure.

The survey was limited to Roorkee area only.

Time constraint was another limitation that is why the questionnaire was
distributed to 60 students.

Lack of interest shown by respondents resulted in incomplete responses.
