Staph aureus
Superficial erythematous
papules & crusts of hair
follicles in the beard area.
Condition was chronic,
aggravated by shaving.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Multiple follicular pustules are
present on the trunk, appearing 3
days after bathing in a hot tub.
P. aeruginosa isolated on culture
from a lesion. Lesions resolved
spontaneously within a week.

Staph aureus
A painful abscess with
associated facial edema in
an otherwise healthy 25year-old male.
The patient felt systemically
ill. The infection resolved
with oral dicloxacillin.

CARBUNCLE
Staph aureus - Large, inflammatory plaque studded with
multiple pustules, some have ruptured, draining pus, on the
nape of the neck. This very painful area is surrounded by
erythema and edema, extends down to fascia, formed from
a confluence of many furuncles.

Many comedones, some of which
are paired, are a characteristic
finding, associated with several
deep exquisitely painful abscesses
and old scars in the axilla.

Staph aureus
Crusted erosions on the
arm of a child.
The confluence of lesions
in the antecubital fossa
suggests prior atopic
dermatitis at the site
that became secondarily
infected.

A large, single
bulla with
surrounding
erythema and
edema on the
thumb of a child;
the bulla has
ruptured only in
the center and
clear serum
exudes from it.

ERYSIPELAS
Group A streptococcus
Painful, shiny, erythematous,
edematous plaques involving
eyelids, cheeks, and the nose
of an elderly febrile male.
On palpation the skin is hot
and tender. Portal of entry
was conjunctivitis.

Staph aureus
Portal of entry of
infection is seen on
the lateral thigh with
necrosis of skin;
infection has
extended mainly
proximally from this
site.

NECROTIZING FASCIITIS

VERRUCA
Verruca vulgaris:
Hyperkeratotic papules
located on dorsum of a finger.
Similar lesions were present
on all fingers of both hands.

VERRUCA

Verruca plantaris: Confluent, skincolored, verrucous papules,

disrupting normal dermatoglyphics
of the plantar foot. The thrombosed
capillaries differentiate the lesion
from a corn & callus.

ACUMINATUM

Multiple, soft papules, discrete

with some coalescing to
raspberry-like lesions, on the
glans penis and prepuce.

Multiple, pink-brown,
soft papules on the labia

HERPES VIRUS

Primary gingivostomatitis:
Multiple, very painful
erosions on the lower labial
mucosa with erythema and
edema of the gingiva. Fever
and tender submandibular
LAD also present

Recurrent herpes labialis:

Grouped and confluent vesicles
with an erythematous rim on
the lips, 24 h after onset of
symptoms

Recurrent infection of the penis:

Group of vesicles with early
central crusting on a red base
arising on the shaft of the penis.

Recurrent vulvar infection:

Large painful erosions on
the labia

VARICELLA VIRUS

Chicken pox - Multiple,

pruritic, erythematous
papules, vesicles ("dewdrops
on a rose petal"), & crusts on
erythematous bases on face
and neck of a young female.
The spectrum of lesions,
arising over 7 to 10 days.

VARICELLA VIRUS

Zoster - T8 to T10 dermatomes

Typical grouped vesicles and
pustules with erythema and
edema of three contiguous
thoracic dermatomes on the
posterior chest wall.

MOLLUSCUM
CONTAGIOSUM
Discrete, solid, skin-colored
papules, 1 to 2 mm diameter,
with central umbilication on
the chest of an adolescent female.
The lesion with an erythematous
halo is undergoing spontaneous
regression.
