What is Human Trafficking?


Human Trafficking is the organized movement of people,
usually women, between countries and within countries for sex
work with the use of physical coercion, deception and bondage
through forced debt
Where is it happening?
* Human Trafficking is happening all around the
world, in many countries, and has become a
business.
Why is it happening?
* The main motive for accepting an offer from a
trafficker is to gain better financial opportunities
for family.
* Traffickers initially offer legitimate jobs such as,
catering, hotel industry, modeling contracts, or au
pair work
* Sometimes marriage, threats and kidnapping are
methods.
Why has it become such a big business?

Human Trafficking has made over $42.5 billion in the past


decade

The United Nations estimates nearly 2.5 million people


from 127 different countries are being trafficked around the
world.

Trafficking victims typically are recruited using coercion,


deception, fraud, the abuse of power, or outright abduction
What is being done in the U.S.?
TVPA- Trafficking Victim Protection Act was signed into law in
October 2000. Before this was enacted, no laws existed to
protect victims trafficking or to prosecute traffickers.

The goals of TVPA are to:


*Prevent human trafficking overseas
*Protect victims and help them rebuild their lives in the U.S. with
federal and state support.
*Prosecute Traffickers of person under stiff Federal penalties

In 2006 the United States government spent


28.5 million to advance towards the goal of
eradicating Human Trafficking.

The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour


division began developing resources to help
investigators identify potential trafficking
issues.
