Genre Theories.

Maltby (2003) argues

studios are interested in
successful cycles of
production and is often
gets misunderstood as
genre.
How has the success of a
film led to the development
of other programs.

Genre is a production tool.

Maltby argues the film
industry is a fashion
industry, always seeking to
replicate its recent
commercial successes
What similarities can you
find? And is it evident
here?

Genres are instance of

repetition and
difference- what does
this mean? How does this
compare to other genres.

John Ellis and Neale

argue genre is an
important ingredient in a
films narrative
implications (2008,163)
What is the narrative?
How does this indicate
genre/s.

Moine(2008) it is bad to
ascribe a single genre in
promotion as it limits
the target audience.
How have they attempted
to blend genres? What
hybrids have they used?

The Hunger Games.

Hunger games was at the start of the
dystopian craze. It was release in
2012, $152,535,747 in its domestic
opening weekend. This was doubled
with the latest film release. Later
in 2013 the second film was
released, along with several other
big blockbuster dystopian. Including
Elysium and Oblivion. This craze
continued with the maze runner and
Divergent in 2014.

This film is described

as a adventure, drama
and Sci-Fi. This means
it can appeal to people
who like one of the
three genres, or all of
them. The production
company have mixed
together 2 quite serious
genres (drama and SciFi)and then have used
adventure to appeal to
the younger audiences
for the rating PG.

The government has every

one in districts, who
create and produce
different things that the
capitol needs. Every year
they have the hunger
game, where by and boy and
girl form every district
fight to the death in an
arena. Katnisss sister was
picked, and she volunteered
as tribute. This indicates
that the genre is an
action, drama hybrid.

The hunger games is

similar to the Divergent
series, as we see two
females that are
special/strong and brave
in some way, taking
charge. They also have
similar barriers, due to
love triangles. However
the hunger games was more
successful in it opening
domestic box office,
receiving $1,587,852 more
than divergent.

White House Down

The protagonist
character is try to
prove to the president
protectors that he can
do the job. After being
told no, the only
person who was able to
save the president form
in house terrorist, was
him.
Both Olympus has fallen and
white house down have the same
plot and face the same barriers.
Both white male, secret service
characters have to save the
present, and in doing so save
there family.
By keeping the genre description
broad, with I hybrid of 3 different
genres, the film dose not limit its
audience. The poster however might, as
it clearly show that it is a cation
based film, due to the flames and
debris every where. However it dose
not scream drama.

While on a tour of the White House

with his young daughter, a Capitol
policeman springs into action to
save his child and protect the
president from a heavily armed
group of paramilitary invaders.
Because of the violence, this film
is an action, drama, thrill.
However it feel it has elements of
comedy, intentional or not, due to
Channing Tatum's other acting roles
he brings a light hearted feel to
his films, including this one.

This was the second film of this style (the

American government become corrupt and the
president needs saving) to come out in 2013.
Olympus Has Fallen revised $150m world wide box
office in march. Followed by white house downs
over $205m global box office. This films are very
similar and seem to have taken inspiration form
each other. Both following the same themes. The
makers of Olympus has fallen later, in 2016,
created London has fallen. It made more than the
first film, but nit as much as white house down.
Showing that there is money in this genre and
narrative of film, and it is easy for big company
to replicated to create a large profit.
