INTRODUCTION
Brake system is the most important system in a

vehicle and used to control the speed.

CLASSIFICATION

Based on the properties, potential candidate materials

for automotive brake disc were selected as:

Gray cast iron (GCI)
Ti-alloy (Ti-6Al-4V)
7.5 wt% WC and 7.5 wt% TiC reinforced
Ti-composite (TMC)
20% SiC reinforced Al-composite (AMC 1)
20% SiC reinforced Al-Cu alloy (AMC 2)
AMC3:
30% SiC reinforced Al-Cu alloy (AMC 3)

COMPONENTS INCLUDED IN AMC3

Aluminium

Copper
SiC

FLOWCHART OF MATERIAL SELECTION

METHOD

MATERIAL SELECTION USING DIGITAL

LOGICAL METHOD
The digital logic method can be employed for the

optimum material selection using with ranking.

The properties and the total number of decisions, i.e.
N (N 1)/2 = 10.(1) are given in the table.

The weighting factor is obtained by dividing the

numbers of positive decisions given to each by total

decisions.

Scaled values for compressive strength, friction

coefficient and thermal capacity are found by

using equation(2)

Scaled values for wear rate and specific gravity are

found by equation(3)

Material performance index is found out by

Where is the scaled property, is the weighting factor

and i is summed over all the n relevant properties.

All the values are tabulated accordingly.

ADVANTAGES
Increased braking force.
Simple in construction.
Low wear rate of brake linings.
Flexibility of brake linings.
Increased mechanical advantage.

DISADVANTAGES
Due to the change in the mixture, it may lead to the

new problems like incompatibility.

Properties of the brake materials should undergo all

the quality tests without any default.

Due to the increase in silicon carbide, the rigidity

over the road may vary.
