Prokaryotic Cells

An organism is a
single, complete
living thing.

All living things are made

of one or more cells.

Unicellular
organisms
are made of

These are
also called
single-celled
organisms.

Organisms that
can be easily seen
by the naked eye
are multicellular.

All living things

can reproduce
themselves.

All living things

contain a set of
instructions in the
form of DNA in
every cell.

Chromosome

DNA
DNA is stored in the form of chromosomes.

Segment
of DNA

Every cell is surrounded by a

cell membrane.

Membrane

The cell membrane is like

the thin plastic baggies.

This thin membrane is the cells

boundary and controls what comes
into and out of the cell.

There are two main

types of cells.

Eukaryotes

Prokaryote

Eukaryotes keep their DNA

inside of a compartment
called a nucleus.

Nucleus
DNA

The nucleus has its

own membrane.

Eukaryotes also many other

organelles that have their
own membrane.

These are called

membrane-bound organelles.

Prokaryotes have DNA, but

they do NOT keep their DNA
in a nucleus.

Prokaryotes are smaller and

simpler than eukaryotes.
They do NOT have any
membrane-bound organelles.
