WHAT IS ARCADE?
Arcade machines are the ancestors of
gaming platforms and are still found
today in amusement arcades, shopping
centres etc.
Unlike many platforms, arcade games
can consist of non-video game material
e.g. pinball machines.
The golden age of arcade games was
the late 1970s-1980s, but died out in
The beginning of arcade gaming was 1909 when J.D. Estes created Skeeball.
Chicago used arcade gaming as a profitable market by creating the first coinoperated machine named Baffle Ball which eventually in 1933 was referred to
(with other similar machines) as games of chance meaning that the public
considered this as gambling.
Despite coin-operated machines being labelled as this, coin-operated video
games were created in 1971 and the first biggest franchise to be born from this
revolution was Pong in 1972 which sold more than 35,000 units.
More arcade video games followed Pongs footsteps as one of the most popular
arcade games ever created, known as Space Invaders, was created in 1978.
Then Pac-Man was created 2 years later (1980) which is the most successful
arcade video game of all-time.
The Arcade video game market continued to evolve as in 1981, Donkey Kong
was created and was one of the first platformers. In one year, it sold 60,000
units, earning $180 million.
