APPROACHES TO

TEACHING WRITING

D. GRAMMAR-SYNTAX-ORGANIZATION
APPROACH

This is based on the claim that writing

cannot be seen as composed of separate
skills which are learned one by one.
Teachers who use this approach devise
writing tasks that let students focus on
organization, grammar and syntax all at
once.

D. GRAMMAR-SYNTAX-ORGANIZATION
APPROACH
Students must know at least vocabulary,
grammar, syntax and organization to
effectively convey the message they want to
express.
This approach links the purpose of writing to
the forms that are needed to convey
message.

E. COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH

This approach stresses the purpose of a

piece of writing and the audience for it.
It is based on the claim that writing is a
communicative act and that the writer
is writing for a real reader.

E. COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH

Teachers encourage students to ask

themselves questions like:
* Why am I writing this?
* Who will read it?

E. COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH

Teachers using this approach extend the

readership to the other students in class
or other teachers to respond or
comment on the outputs.
Writing tasks are based on real-life tasks
like writing informal and forma letters.

F. THE PROCESS APPROACH

This approach lets the students explore

a topic through writing.
Students look at their outputs not as
the finished product but as the
beginning of the task to improve their
writing .

F. THE PROCESS APPROACH

Teachers give their students two crucial

supports:
* Time to try out new ideas
* Feedback on the contents of their drafts.
* This is a chance to discover new ideas and
new language forms to express ideas.

F. THE PROCESS APPROACH

It has three stages:

Pre-writing Teacher stimulates creativity.
Focusing Ideas Students are allowed to
write about the topic without worrying
about accuracy.
Evaluating, structuring and editing
Students organize their ideas and focus on
mechanics.

F. THE PROCESS APPROACH

Feedback Teacher provides the feedback
and encourages students to do better next
time.
The teacher serves as the facilitator.
The students are given considerable freedom.
This may be time-consuming.
