Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is an Indian entrepreneur. She is


the chairman and managing director of Biocon Limited, a
biotechnology company based in Bangalore , India and the
current chairperson of IIM-Bangalore.
In 2014, she was awarded the Othmer Gold Medal, for
outstanding contributions to the progress of science and
chemistry. She is on the Financial Times top 50 women in
business list.
As of 2015, she was listed as the 85th most powerful
woman in the world by Forbes. At present in 2016, she has
been listed one more time in "Forbes" - the most powerful
woman in the world at 77th position.
Her rich contributions to research, innovation and
affordable healthcare have been recognized by several
national and international awards.

In 1978, Mazumdar Shaw joined Biocon Bio chemicals


Limited, Ireland as a trainee manager. Soon after that
sheset up Biocon India, incollaborationwith the sameIrish
Company. She rented a garage space in Bangalore and
with an initial investment of Rs. 10,000 she commenced
her entrepreneurial journey.
In the late 1970s, biotechnology was unheard of. As a
result, it was not easy to obtain funds for the venture.
Banks and financial institutions were wary of giving her
loans as biotechnology was a new field and was therefore
considered "high risk". Being a woman, and one with no
business qualification at that, made things even more
difficult.
Mazumdar also faced problems recruiting people. People
were reluctant to work for women entrepreneurs as they
doubted their credibility. She soon overcame these

Biocon started as an industrial enzyme manufacturer and


commenced exporting to USA and Europe. Within the first
year, Mazumdar Shaws venture started churning profits.
They had enough money to buy a 20-acre property in
Bangalore and shifted operations to the new location.
Kiran transformed Biocon an industrial enzymes
manufacturing company to a fully integrated biopharmaceutical company, a company with a well-balanced
business portfolio of products and a research focus on
diabetes, oncology and auto-immune diseases.
After that, there was no turning back. Through her
dedication and hard work she took biocon to great heights
and made it one of the leading companies in field of
biotechnology.

Ms Mazumdar-Shaws commitment to affordable healthcare


extends beyond business. She has established the 1,400-bed
Mazumdar-Shaw Cancer Centre in Bangalore to deliver
affordable world-class cancer care services to patients
irrespective of socio-economic status.
She has also set up the Mazumdar Shaw Centre for
Translational Research, a non-profit research institute
dedicated to developing scientific breakthroughs for treating a
wide range of human diseases. Her philanthropic efforts have
led her to be featured in the Forbes List of Heroes of
Philanthropy.
Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw is also the second Indian to join the
Giving Pledge global initiative created by Warren Buffett and
Bill and Melinda Gates that encourages billionaires to give the
majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.
She has been recognized with the Padma Shri (1989) & the
Padma Bhushan (2005), two of Indias prestigious civilian

Leadership Style
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is a transformational
leader. She had a Vision of her own and she is an
individualised type. She never follows what others
do and never cares about what others think.
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw inspires her team with a
shared vision of future.
She focuses on R&D and innovative strategy to
produce new products.
She possesses courage and a dare-to-take-risk
attitude.
