Professor Harald Haas from the

university of Edinburgh coined the

term Li-Fi in TED global talk in 2011.
The Li-Fi
consortium has
proven that
10gbbs data rate
is possible by Li-Fi technology.

Working Of Li-Fi

Comparision between
Li-Fi and Wi-Fi

Li-Fi can be thought of as a light based Wi-Fi .

That is , it uses light instead of radio waves to
transmit information.
Unlike Wi-Fi modems , Li-Fi uses transceiver
fitted LED lamps that can light a room as well
as trasmit and receive information .
Wi-Fi is great for general wireless coverage
within buildings , and Li-Fi is ideal for high
density wireless data coverage in confined
area and for relieving radio interference issues.

Li-Fi vs Wi-Fi

Li-Fi

Fi

In Li-Fi data transfer

occurs through light
medium.

In Wi-Fi data transfer

occurs through Radio
waves.

In Li-Fi light is blocked

by the walls and
hence will provide
more secure data
transfer.

In Wi-Fi RF signal
cannot be blocked by
the walls and hence
need to employ
techniques to achieve
secure data transfer.

The data transfer

speed is about 1Gbps.
Frequency of
operation is about 100
terra hertz.
Li-Fi is cheaper
because free doesnt
need license and it
uses light.

The data transfer

speed is about
150mbps.
Frequency of
operation is 2.4 , 4.9
and 56 giga hertz.
Wi-Fi is comparatively
expensive as it uses
radio frequency.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS
1.

ADVANTAGES
Its the fastest and cheapest wireless
communication system.
Even a HD film can be downloaded
within half an hour.
Its great for high density coverage.
It will reduce electricity bill and
maintenance cost.

DISADVANTAGES
Light rays cannot penetrate through
walls.
It can be detected only upto 10 m.

Our mere future may have this sight
