What is subtraction?
The process or skill of taking one number or
amount away from another.

What is the Trade-First Strategy?

Steps:
1.

Look at the digits in the 1s place. If subtracting these numbers gives

a negative number, trade 1 ten for ten 1s.

2.

Look at the digits in the tens place, If subtracting these digits gives a
negative number, trade one hundred for ten 10s.

3.

Subtract in each column

What is the Partial-Difference Method?

Example:

83-27=
86+30=56
(add 3 to each)

83-27=
76-20=56
(subtract 7)

315-95=
320-100=220
(Add 5 to each)

*Both ways give you the same answer
