Preparation
1.

Greet and introduce yourself to the patient

Prepare the equipment needed

Identify the patient, name, age, medical record

Explain the procedure

Prepared the administration set to iv fluid (expel


air bubbles, chambers appropriate fluid level)

7.

Select the vein, wash hand, apply gloves

8.

Apply tourniquet, proximal to the insertion site

9.

Select vein by palpation, wipe the skin with alcohol


swab (do not repalpable)

10.

Unsheath the cannula, hold the patients forearm


using the thumb (skin taut)

11.

Place needle inch below the site, bevel facing


up, angle 20-30o, insert the needle

12.

Level the angle after the vein located, backflow

Insert cannula whilst withdrawing the needle

Flashback (+) along the length of the cannula,


advance until fully inserted

15.

Release skin tension, relax the tourniquet

16.

Apply pressure over the vein, remove introducer

Connect administration set, open flow regulator,


adjust flow rate

Secure the cannule, loop the iv tubing
