Objective
Students will be able to identify coins and know their value
Students will be able to count money
Students will be able to pick the correct coins when asked for a
certain amount of cents
Coins
Pennies are worth one cent ($0.01, 1), it
would take 100 pennies to equal a dollar.

Dimes are worth ten cents ($0.10, 10), it
would take ten dimes to equal a dollar.
Counting Money
Pennies are worth one cent, so five
pennies is the same as one nickel.
Counting Money
Quarters are worth twenty-five cents, that is also equal to two dimes and one nickel.
Counting Questions
Now that we know how much each coin is worth, we will do some examples of how we
could make different amounts of money from combining coins.
1. If someone asked you for FIFTY CENTS, how many dimes would that be?
2. If someone asked you for THIRTY CENTS, how many pennies would that be?
3. If someone asked you for a DOLLAR, how many quarters would that be?
4. If someone asked for TWENTY TWO CENTS, what coins could you give them?
5. If someone asked you for SIXTY SEVEN CENTS, what coins could you give them?
Answers
1. To give someone fifty cents in dimes, you would give them FIVE DIMES.
2. To give someone thirty cents in pennies, you would give them THIRTY PENNIES.
3. To give someone a dollar in quarters, you would give them FOUR QUARTERS.
4. To give someone twenty-two cents, you could give them TWO DIMES AND TWO
PENNIES.
5. To give someone sixty-seven cents, you could give them TWO QUARTERS, ONE
DIME, ONE NICKEL, AND TWO PENNIES.
*There are other combinations for #4 and #5 that we will discuss together.
Here is a fun video that will help you remember how much each coin is worth and how
we can add them together to equal other coin amounts! I will also add a website with fun
