INTRODUCTION
Varanasi, once known as Benares or Banaras and Kashi, is a
historical city in northern India. The city is sacred to Hindus and
Jains and also one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in
the world, Ancient Varanasi from the beginning of its history up
to circa 700 A.D., as revealed by the archaeological sources.
Many Hindus believe that dying in Varanasi brings
salvation/nirvana and so they make the trip to the city when they
realize that they are close to death.
For some, the culture shock of the burning corpses in plain view
and the feces overflowing from the Ganges can be a bit
overwhelming. However, the scene of pilgrims doing their
devotions in the River Ganga at sunrise set against the backdrop
of the centuries old temples is probably one of the most
impressive sights in the world.

Situated on the left bank of Ganga, Varanasi lies almost in the

south- east corner of Uttar Pradesh. It is located at long,83 1
30 E, Lat.25 4 39 N. The city occupies almost a central
position in the Ganga valley.

A big part of the present day city of Varanasi is situated on a high
ridge of Kankar for a distance about four kilometers, being a
tributary of the former and flowing from the north-west to the
south-east in the northern part of the township. The highest level
is reached in the north-east at Rajghat at a highest of about 275
ft. above the mean sea level.
As is the case with almost all the present day urban centers,
natural vegetation in and around Varanasi is hardly visible. The
nearest natural forest at present is situated in the uncultivated
hilly tracts of Chakia tehsil although it has been retained in small
patches in the remaining tehsils also.
The accidental discovery of the archaeological site at Rajghat ,
believed to be the remains of the ancient capital of kasi
Janapada, marks the beginning of the archaeological researches
in Varanasi, though some stone sculptures of considerable
iconographical importance were also found earlier in different
parts of the present Kasi railway station.

A large number of antiquities was unearthed during the dig,

revealing the archaeological potentiality of the site. Considering
the importance of this vast ancient habitation, the archaeological
Survey of India selected a portion of the Rajghat mound for a
small scale excavation under Krishna Deve during Oct.Nov.,1940.

A detailed report of this excavation was never published except a

brief note by the excavator. A resume of the results of Krishna
Devas excavation is mentioned hereunder. It is fairly well
established now that the Rajghat mounds represent the remains
of the ancient city of Varanasi. Amongst the early scholars,
Sheering was the first to point out that the old city of Varanasi
stood towards north possibly on both the sides of the river
Varuna, where it joins the Ganga. He also brought to notice many
archaeological remains mostly situated towards the northern
side.

LITERATURE REVIEW
To completely understand what motivates tourists is difficult to
gauge. There is something elusive about motivation that
researchers and academics have not been able to truly evaluate.
But a certain structured way of looking at the motivational factor is
necessary to grasp the principles of tourist motivation. The
demand of travel comes as an outcome of motivation. Thus we can
say motivation translates a need into a goal that compels tourist
behavior.

A tourists destination becomes a part of branding process

which is crucial factor of competition. In addition one has to pay
attention to brand equity or destination equity to give certain
destinations a competitive edge to become select brands that
invites the loyalty of the clients. So a strong brand can be
differentiated from a common product. The branding of destination
helps the consumer to make his choices with minimum risk of bad
decisions.
(CLARKE 1996)

Kasi or Varanasi is one of the most ancient,

famous and holiest of the holy Hindu pilgrim
centers. It is situated between two small
streams that flow into the river Ganga, Varana
on its northern border, and Asi (or Assi) on its
southern border, from whom it derives its name
Varanasi. The name kasi is derived from either
its original founder or a dynasty that ruled it or
the kingdom with which it was associated.
According to another theory the place might
have got its name from a grass named kusa that
grew wildly in the region where the city was
built.
