Plastic Waste

Plastic waste is one of the biggest problems in the

environment nowadays.

Low Biodegradability

Plastic Waste in the Philippines

The Philippines has been listed the third highest

producer of plastic wastes thrown into the ocean.

The country generates 2.7 million metric tons of

plastic garbage each year, 20% or 521,000 tons of

which ends up in the ocean.

PLASTIC CHB

AIM:
To integrate plastic into a construction material without

significant effect on its other properties or slight

compromise in strength.
To decrease a large amount of plastic by mixing it into a

construction material

CHB- Concrete Hollow Blocks

Main Construction Material in the Philippines

Advantages:
Highly durable
Provide thermal and sound insulation
Economical
Environment friendly
Low insurance rates

Plastic
The plastic is one of the recent engineering materials

which have appeared in the market all over the world.

Four types of plastic:

Polythene Sheet
Raw Plastics
Road Wastes
Plastic Straw

Materials Used:
Fine Sand
Ground plastic bottles & PVCs
Portland cement
Water
CHB molder

The Hollow Block sizes in the Philippines

40cm (length) X 20 cm (width) X 4 in (thickness)
40cm (length) X 20 cm (width) X 5 in (thickness)
40cm (length) X 20 cm (width) X 6 in (thickness)

Types of mixture used:

a. 25% of sand and 75% of plastic granules
b. 50% of sand and 50% of plastic granules
c. 75% of sand and 25% of plastic granules

Mixture A
a. 25% of sand and 75% of plastic granules

The results show that this

mixture ratio give a large
deterioration of compressive
strength

Mixture B
a. 50% of sand and 50% of plastic granules

The results show that this

mixture ratio give a medium
deterioration of compressive
strength

Mixture C
a. 70% of sand and 25% of plastic granules

The results show that this

mixture ratio give the least
deterioration of compressive
strength

Ordinary CHB
According to the American
Society of Testing and
Materials (ASTM), the
compressive strength
requirement for non-load
bearing blocks is 2.4 Mpa or
348.13 Psi to
4.83 Mpa or 700.61 Psi

vs

Plastic CHB
According to the results the
plastic CHB have an average
of 280 Mpa or 406.10 Psi

Application:

Perimeter walls
Waiting Shed

Low-cost Housing
