Native Alaskan and

Hawaiian Voice in
Modern America
Daisy Sjolseth, Kai Hastings, Grant Laughlin, Eric Tustin

Our Question
How has European settlement affected the culture and voice of native Alaskans
and Hawaiians, and how has that changed their attitudes towards Americans?

Efforts
Papers
Government hearings
Literature
Documentaries
Video Clips from Natives that speak of their situation
Tried
To email Chiefs and tribal heads, to no avail

Target Audience
Seventh-Tenth grade students.
The point of this target audience is to have an audience that is
able to understand as well as comprehend the issues and topic
being presented.
Plus, having this age group will make the teaching portion of the
material much easier due to the fact that these kids are older,
as well as partly informed on natives already, thus creating a
solid platform for us to teach.

Raw Lesson Plan Outline

1. Set up lesson, introduce our topic, and explain that people who participate
will receive candy.
2. Ask the students to write down the first thing they think of when they think
of Native Americans and discuss what they wrote.
3. Play the first video and have them take notes on what they see and anything
that they would want to mention.
4. Have them discuss what they saw in the video (make sure to bring up the
voice of the natives and their attitudes toward Americans. Also, mention the
Akaka Bill for Hawaii)
5. Show next video and have discussion (make sure to bring up the voice of the
natives and their attitudes toward Americans)
6. Sum up whole lesson and end with a Q&A
