Understanding Ratification and Its Impact

Ratification of the US Constitution involved approval from the states. There was debate between Federalists who supported the Constitution as it was written and wanted a strong national government, and Anti-Federalists who were concerned it gave too much power to the central government and wanted protections for states' rights and individual liberties. The Constitution required ratification by 9 of the 13 states, which was achieved after Federalists agreed to propose a Bill of Rights as a compromise to gain the support of Anti-Federalists.
