Parabola
What is Parabola?
Parabola is the locus of point that moves such that it
is always equidistant from a fixed point and a fixed
line. The fixed point is called focus and the fixed line
is called directrix.

Parabola
General

form equation:

Standard form equation: ,a 0

y, vertex ( 0, 0)
We use the completing the square to change the general form
equation to standard form equation.
Focus at ( 0, p)
Directrix y

Definition of each symbol

Focus is located at distance a from vertex in the direction of parabolas
opening.
Directrix is at distance a from the vertex. It is a straight line located at the
opposite side of parabolas opening.
Vertex is the point extremity of parabola, i.e. highest point for open
downward, lowest point for open upward, rightmost point for leftward, and
leftmost point for rightward. The coordinates of vertex is denoted as (h, k).
Axis is the line of symmetry of parabola. It contains both the focus and the
vertex and always perpendicular to the directrix.
Latus rectum: length of latus rectum indicates the focal width of the
parabola. Length of latus rectum is the absolute value of 4p, or l 4p l

Example 1

1.) Find the standard form of the equation of a parabola with

vertex (0,0) and focus (0,4)?
Solution :

(directrix)

F (0,4)

Example 2
2.)Find the focus point and directrix and graph the
parabola :

The parabola opens up. means and. This is the distance from
the vertex to the directrix or to the focus point. The focus
point is 2 units up so it is (0,2). The directrix is a horizontal
line 2 units down from the vertex. The equation is .

Example 3
Application of Parabola
The Parkers radio telescope has a parabolic dish shape with
diameter 210 ft and depth 32 ft. Because of this parabolic shape,
distant rays hitting the dish will be reflected directly toward the
focus.
a)Determine an equation that models this cross section by placing
the vertex at the origin with the parabola opening up.

Solution:

a) Locate the vertex at the origin. The form of the parabola is The
parabola must pass through the point (
