Rebuilding Resources
After conquering the
Hawaiian Islands and
unifying them,
Kamehameha had created
considerable destruction
to the islands, especially
ahupuaas.
Today you will about learn
4 of the resources that
needed to be rebuilt.

Terraced Hills
Terraced hills are
like ledges.
Decrease erosion
and surface runoff.
Allows you to farm
on hilly land.

Taro Patches
Used ponds as
patches for taro,
called loi.
Staple food for
Hawaiians, was
necessary for a
successful kingdom.
Equivalent to our
rice and potatoes.

Irrigation Ditches
Irrigation means the
artificial application
of water to land or
soil.
Used to supply dry
areas with water.
Increases
agricultural
production.

Fish Ponds
Walls constructed
from lava boulders.
Keeps fish inside
while allowing the
sea water to flow in
and out.
Only Royal Hawaiian
chiefs could eat fish
from these ponds.
