SLO MISCONCEPTIONS

FACULTY MEETING
MRS. ELIZABETH CAMPION, PRINCIPAL

This presentation will address the

misconceptions regarding SLOs under
Education Law 3012-d.

WHAT ARE STUDENT LEARNING

OBJECTIVES (SLO)?

A Student Learning Objective, or SLO, is an

academic goal set for an educators students at
the start of a course. It represents the most
important learning that is aligned to Common
Core, national, or state standards, as well as any
other school and district/BOCES priorities. The
goals must be specific and measurable, based on
available prior student learning data.

ARE SLOS NEGOTIATED?

They are not negotiated, but are approved by

the District Superintendent or other trained
administrator.

They need to provide a growth target of at

least one year.

ARE THEY PART OF THE EVALUATION

PROCESS?

They are not meant to be there for evaluation,

however they can be used to drive instruction.

Use the rationale as a means to describe how you

would like to best inform instruction and for your
students to have academic growth.

Students academic success is the main goal.

SHOULD I HAVE LOWER TARGETS FOR

STRUGGLING STUDENTS?
All targets set must have a one year of expected growth.
However, the administrator or designee may take the
following characteristics into account, as applicable:
poverty, students with disabilities, English language
learners status, and prior academic history.

Rigorous but achievable growth targets accompanied by

appropriate accommodations, supports, and intensity of
instruction can help to ensure all students are successful in
making the expected minimum years worth of growth.

ARE PREASSESSMENTS USED IN SLOS?

Yes, they are allowed but multiple uses of

evidence should be used to establish the
baseline.

The more evidence you have, this will help

you identify the needs of your students.
